Power Tools: Playing It Safe With Power Tools

Home Improvement
Power tools make a big job go faster, more efficiently and they can be fun to use as well. But, for as much fun they are and as easy as they make the job, power tools can also be dangerous if you aren't careful.

As the name implies, these tools have power- they go faster and work harder. As a result, these fast moving parts can also do a lot of damage either directly or as a by-product of their work. Here are some tips to keep your body safe while you enjoy your working with your power tools:

* Protect the eyes

Whether you are sawing, grinding, sanding or drilling, debris is thrown into the air whenever you use power tools. To make things worse, the debris is generally being flung out at a fast speed. This means that sawdust and other bits can be flung into your eye and either irritate or actually become embedded in it. Either way, it is painful and can permanently damage your cornea and your eyesight. To protect your eyes, always wear safety glasses in your workshop.

* Protect the ears

Some power tools are so noisy and work at such high decibels that it is damaging to the ears. While one time use can cause some short-term effects like ringing in the ears and difficulty hearing, prolonged use and frequent use can cause permanent damage. Ear plugs dull the noise and can reduce the effects on the ears.

* Protect the nose and lungs

Very fine bits of debris and sawdust are flung into the air when you work with wood. Just one time exposure to sawdust can cause allergic reactions and asthma as the nose and lungs are inundated with dust. Frequent exposure has even more damaging effects on the lungs and nasal passages. The best way to protect against this is to wear a mask that filters the debris when you inhale.

* Protect the appendages

Wear gloves if necessary, but not if they impede the use of the equipment. Also, never wear lose fit clothing as it can get caught in machinery and cause damage to the equipment as well as your skin. Never take your eyes off of what you are doing. It would be very easy to get distracted and cut yourself or, worse yet, cut of a finger or two.

* Protect the equipment

Keep your power tools clean and oiled for optimal performance. Give them frequent checks to make sure that the electrical cord, gaskets and seals are in one piece. For motor over-hauls, hire a professional. Proper maintenance is the key to safety for you and the equipment.

If you treat your power tools with respect while you are having fun working with them, they can be a wonderful addition your workshop. They are a great investment because they make projects go faster and are easier on the worker. If you protect yourself and the equipment, they can make your projects around the house go smoothly and quickly.
