Every year around this time we watch expectedly as the next wave of Super Bowl commercials wash over us in a wave of entertainment. Some are funny, some are cute. Many miss their mark and a few, a select few and not every year, make a lasting impression. After all, who doesn’t remember “Bud,” “Wise,” “Er?” or “ATM…ATM fix everything?” The following is a list of infamous commercials that will haunt us forever. Missed the Mark These ads tried to be funny, but clearly missed the mark. Many didn’t even make sense. • Fred Astaire: Not only do we not remember what we were watching Fred Astaire dancing for during the Super Bowl, he was prancing around in one of his most famous scenes with a vacuum cleaner. Classless and forgetful. • Jay Leno/Berlin Wall: Huh? Jay Leno sold Doritos in front of the Berlin Wall. We don’t get it either. Did Doritos sell more chips? The answer: no. Funny or Not, Here They Come The following commercials may have been funny to some, but for all the wrong reasons. • Ed McMahon and MC Hammer: Why were we forced to watch McMahon and Hammer hawking gold toilets? Not only was it depressing, it just wasn’t funny, especially after McMahon’s real life money struggles at such an advanced age. • Spuds MacKenzie: Nothing funny or inventive about a dog selling beer. He may have been cute, but did nothing to make money for Budweiser. • MacGruber: Yes, making fun of the 80s television show MacGyver can be funny. No it wasn’t here. Not only does most of the world watch the Super Bowl, the problem is, most of the world doesn’t know what MacGyver was, or why MacGruber is trying to sell us Pepsi. Whether you’re a football fan or just a casual observer, Superbowl XLV is bound to leave us with a list of unforgettable highlights. Paul is an avid writer, and sports fanatic.
