If you don’t have a date or fancy dinner arranged this year for Valentine’s Day, don’t panic. Buy a big bar of chocolate, your favourite tipple, and settle down with a good book. To help you choose, I’ve devised a helpful list of great books to fall in love with this Valentine’s Day. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen An old classic, Miss Austen’s romantic novel has withstood the test of time. Numerous different stage, film and television adaptations have been produced, but perhaps the most memorable and firm favourite amongst the ladies is the BBC version featuring Colin Firth as Mr Darcy. This year, read the original version and fall in love with Mr Darcy all over again. The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks Follow Allie and Noah’s summer romance adventures and on-off relationship throughout this novel. After spending the entire summer side by side, will their socio-economic differences force them apart? The Notebook is a real happy go lucky novel. However, it’s advisable to keep a box of tissues handy as the plot twist near the end is a guaranteed tear jerker. P.S. I Love You by Cecilia Ahern Holly and Gerry were childhood sweethearts - sure they fought like all other couples, but nobody who knew them could imagine a more perfect couple. However, Gerry’s untimely death leaves Holly in bits. Forced to cope with life without her husband, she gets a surprise on her 30th birthday. Holly discovers that Gerry has left her several notes, giving her guided instructions about how to live happily without him, each signed ‘P.S. I Love You’. Will Holly find happiness again? Will Gerry’s death haunt her forever? Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare This is a tragic love story about a ‘pair of star-crossed lovers’. Romeo and Juliet fall in love with each other at first sight but unbeknown to them at first, they come from two of the richest families of Verona, and each is the enemy of the other. Will they prove that true love conquers all? Can their love unite the two families? You may have read this at school but it really is a classic love story and one that will remain so for many years to come. So hopefully this short list has inspired you that reading about love can be the perfect way to spend Valentine’s Day. Get yourself in the mood for love this year with one of these great books.
