DirectBuy Rhode Island: Basic Lawn Care Tips for the Ocean State

Home Improvement
Spring is the time of year when the sun is out and the breeze is blowing, both helping plants grow anew. It is also the time when the sound of lawnmowers fills the air in almost every neighborhood.

Many homeowners take pride in their lawns, especially for those in areas famous for abundant plantations like Rhode Island. They spent a great deal of money, time, and effort in tending, caring, fertilizing, mowing, and grooming their yards. A healthy lawn looks like a smooth, lush green carpet that’s perfect for golf of croquet. Here are a few basic tips to have yours look like that.

Setting the Soil

As with any project, planning and preparation is everything. In gardening and caring for the lawn, you always need to prepare the soil before you start planting. Test for the pH level of the soil, as winter can alter it. Many nurseries, gardening shops, and even agricultural universities have DIY test kits you can use. You’ll also need to get rid of weeds and ensure that the soil does not dry easily or lump up. This is because the rain or melting snow creates conditions friendly to weeds.

Set the scene and the soil by ridding the area of all weeds, including the roots. Do this even if it means tilling the top six inches of soil. Loosen up the soil to improve drainage by rototilling to at least six inches. You can also add a little slope to allow for better drainage and to prevent puddles and pooling. Finish the topsoil off by packing it with a roller and grading the area with a rake.

Get your gloves, rake, spade, and other gardening tools first before doing this. Visit the DirectBuy Rhode Island and other home improvement centers to look for these items.

Greening and Seeding

After cleaning and repairing the lawn, you’ll need to reseed the area, particularly the bare and brown ones. Find out first what kept your grass from growing in the area. Lack of soil nutrients is easy to manage, adding in new fertilizer and aerating the soil for better compaction.

Find out also if seeding or sodding is the better way to green your yard. Rolling out a new carpet of sod is the quickest and easiest way to cover the lawn with grass, but it can get costly especially if you have a large area. Seeding is the most affordable way, but is also the most tedious and backbreaking, as you have to plant the seed manually. Even using machines and techniques like hydro seeding could take up some time.

Giving it a Haircut

One of the trademarks of a well-kept lawn is freshly mown grass. Many homeowners, however, fumble with this by cutting the grass way too short. Many experts recommend setting the mower to its highest possible notch, allowing only the top third of the grass blades to be cut. Taller grass promotes better root development, and serves as a shade blocking out the sun, which prevent the weed seeds from germinating.

Visit this website and those of other home improvement centers to look for gardening products, tools, and equipment necessary for your landscaping project.
