Verizon has released its report of 2013 about data breach (Data Breach Investigations Report). Verizon with 18 other companies around the world investigated. The report is based on confirmed 621 data breaches and total 47000 security incidents. The report presents a complete picture of the techniques used by attackers to get the data. It has some interesting facts of data breach. Password guessing, cracking and reusing confidential According to the report, almost half of the hacking is done through hacking; about 80 percent involved presuming, recycling and cracking confidential. The small size businesses are more affected through this kind of attacks. One of the basic reasons of such successful attacks is the weak passwords that employees set for their data security. Setting easy password is an ignorance of security protocols as hackers are expert in guessing passwords. Phishing This is another successful tool to get the private information of the organizations. The cyber criminals send an email to hundreds and thousands of people which look like it is sent from a company for marketing purpose and offering interesting offers. The email contains a link which hackers ask people to click to get the benefit from such offer. A click on such link gives a safe passage to the cyber criminals to all the data saved in the system. It is the most common and tempting way of data breach. That is why it is always recommended that any email from any unknown address should not be accessed, and if accessed should be clicked on any of the links it contained. The majority companies remain unaware of data breach Almost 62 percent of the breaches take months or years to discover. And a large majority of the breaches is discovered by the outsiders rather than the suffered organizations. This is quite a depressing statistic which indicates that the data breach does not have effective tools to recognize the breach of data. The insider threat is a major threat Verizon report has emphasized especially on the threat to data that is from the internal employees of the company. Internal employees of the company are the biggest threat to the security of the data after cyber crooks. More than 30 percent of breaches are done by the company’s own employees. The breach by employees can be intentional and unintentional as well. If an employee of a company saves his/her data in a portable storage device like USB flash drive, and by mistake he/she loses it or gets it stolen, the data will leak but the employee will not stand as guilty. However, in some other cases, employees are bought by the rival companies and the employees sell the rival company confidential information. They bribe heavily to some ‘not so loyal’ employees and make them their agent. No pre-determined prey Verizon’s report for 2013 also reveals that the majority of the people who lose their data are the pre-determined aim of the attackers. As the criminals send thousands of emails, the person who will click on it will give his/her private information. However, if a person loses its portable drive, he/she will also be an example of aimed victim. As anybody can be a victim of such attacks, you should take precaution to avoid such breaches. Using security software that can Password Protect Files. However, setting a strong password will be necessary to avoid breach even if you are using strong security software.
