Make sure to read this article and follow the instruction carefully to save time and money while completing a better job.

Precaution
• Do not work near power lines, TV antenna and cables. Never allow the metal ladder to come contact with these lines.
• NEVER perform roofing job in cold or wet weather. Allow early morning dew to disappear before doing your work.
• Wear rubber soled shoes with non-skid tread in order to prevent slips
• Keep in mind to clean the roof surface from loose nails and shingles
• Keep people away from the edges of the roof

Measurement is the Key
Determine the square footage of the roof. To calculate this, measure the width and length of a single side of your roof then multiply those two measurements. The result would be the side’s square footage. You can repeat this process for the other side of the roof, and then add the two totals together to determine the overall square footage of the roof. List the total number of measurement.

Determine the materials needed
Go to your local building supply center. They would help you to calculate exactly how much “square” you’ll need. Every square is equal to 100 square feet of coverage and it is the term which amounts of shingles are counted.
Most asphalt shingles are blend together with three or four bundles per square. Every shingles comes in different sizes, which is a square of any particular type may vary. Remember that no matter what size or shape of shingle you are using, a square will always be equal to 100 square feet of coverage.

Purchasing Materials tips
• Purchase additional 10 percent of the total number of shingle for cutting, waste and starter courses and to save spare shingles you would use for your repairs.
• You’ll need roofing cement for edges, ridges or flashings. You may also use caulk after cementing the flashing to save your home from leaks.

Replacing Damaged Shingles
• Use a small pry bar to pull out nails holding the damaged shingle. Remove both nails and shingle using a small pry bar. Position the roofing nails so they are covered by the shingle above. Apply small amount of roofing cement to the nail heads for extra protection against leaks.
• If you are going to replace damaged shingle, replace it with the one that have similar in weight size and color. When you are re-shingling, install the shingles directly over the existing material, provided that there are no more than 3 layers of roofing being laid.

Shingle Life
Asphalt shingles last for almost 15 to 20 years. This is a large time for structural deterioration, particularly when the roofing materials and standards couldn’t have possibly well for 20 years ago. By stripping the roof, you can get an opportunity to see the existing damage to make the necessary repairs needed. When stripping the roof, it is advisable to utilize the “roofer’s spade” this equipment resemble a square top shovel, but it have a notched blade upfront and attached fulcrum on the underside designed to make the prying up of shingles an easy task.

Encountering a Chimney
If you encounter a chimney in your house, simply nail aluminum flashing around its perimeter then seal it using plastic cement. Then you would need to shingle it over as you get to it, cut it accordingly. This is the same as the vent pipes, except you can purchase a “collar” that consists of an aluminum base with a rubber gasket that fits the pipe down the roof.
