Not all hot tubs are created equal. Did you know that there are some models that you can inflate? It’s true, and they are actually pretty popular. Just like many above ground pools, the outer layer is comprised of plastic that is inflated via an air pump. Once the outer shell is completely full, you simply add water and let it heat up like a standard hot tub. These “soft tubs” as they are sometimes referred, are cheaper and quite durable. Many of them also feature insulated covers as well, meaning they aren’t as energy-inefficient as some would tend to think. If cared for properly; an inflatable hot tub can provide hours of enjoyment and last a long time. However, given the inferior quality of these tubs in comparison to their regular counterparts, frequent maintenance is required. You would think that since they lack all the mechanical and electrical components needed to run standard hot tubs, soft tubs wouldn’t require as much attention in this respect, but this is not the case. Due to their smaller size, you don’t need to worry about buying chemicals or checking the ph levels, which is a definite benefit. One thing that does tend to pose problems if left unchecked is the filter, as these devices have been known to clog easily. Inflatable hot tub maintenance tips • Drain and refill once a week; this is one task a lot of buyers are not prepared for, and it may take a bit of getting used to at first. To keep the water clean and sanitary, you will need to completely drain the rub and refill it with fresh water on a regular basis. The filter is simply not advanced enough to catch all the debris, and it cannot prevent algae and bacteria from growing either. • Since you cannot add chemicals, draining is the only solution. If there aren’t a lot of people going to be getting in the tub and/or if it is used sparingly, you will probably be ok draining it bi-weekly. Be sure to scrub the inside down with mild soap and a washcloth before refilling. • Rinse before getting in; rinsing your body off (in the shower or with the hose) prior to entering the inflatable tub will minimize the risk of getting contaminants inside. This will also help prolong the life of the filter. • Use spa covers; hot tub covers do more than just insulate the water. They also prevent large debris (leaves, bugs, etc.) from getting in as well. • Clean the filter when you drain the tub; this maintenance tip can be easily overlooked, but doing so can lead your inflatable tub to a premature end. Rinse off the visible buildup with the hose and then use a designated scrub brush to clean in between the grooves. Remember to replace the filter with a new one at least twice a year, more often if necessary. With these tips, you can help keep your inflatable hot tub for a long time. Routine maintenance is the key!
