What is a questionnaire all about? This is nothing but, a set of questions for the purpose of collecting information from the respondents. A researcher in any discipline without information can’t proceed in his or her research endeavor. Why the importance of questionnaire; well, it is for collecting quantitative primary data. However, the collected data must be coherent and consistent for analysis. Therefore, the responsibility is to design the questions properly so as to induce perfect response. When it comes to design a questionnaire, there is no specific rule or frame work to design but the researcher must have the attributes of: • Skill • Creativity • Experience Have a look at the nuance of questionnaire design; the researcher must keep in mind which is as follows: • The type of information required • The way to frame individual questions • The necessity of question in particular context • Several questions or one question to collect a specific information • Respondents’ potential to answer the questions • Respondents’ willingness to answer With these highlighted points above, you could shape the questionnaire deign to your advantage. Before framing the questions, assess about the targeted respondents and their qualification. You never know their level of understanding or their perception about certain topic in which you are going to conduct the research. Hence it is better to frame questions as per their understanding. For instance the questions put to college students would not induce the same result when those questions are put before the labor class. As per the particular group of respondents, the questionnaire should be framed. Types of questionnaire design-It involves both structured and unstructured. Unstructured questions- In this type, respondents are allowed to answer in their words, they feel comfortable. Here, the requisites are: • Open-ended • General attitude and opinions • No bias The purpose of questionnaire in the unstructured type is to identify the motivation of respondents and comprehending their world. Structured questions- In this case, as the name suggests the question features in a format. Questions are framed in the form of multiple choices or in a scale. The design of multiple choice questions is in the form of: • Possible alternatives • Mutually exclusive • Collective exhaustive The advantage of multiple choice questions is to reduce the bias of interviewer. Let’s discuss a little about the scale and as per the developer Likert, its name is Likert’s scale and wide prevalent in research field. This scale revolves around two end points of strongly disagree and strongly agree. Just putting the question before the respondents would lead to getting the information. With this type of attitude, you will never get accurate answer. Framing the question also has its share of issues, the researchers encounter. Reason, framing questions has various facets.
