4 Signs Your Cold Is Not Common

Health
A common cold can be a huge bother. It makes you feel less capable, more tired, and completely disinterested in any work or responsibilities. It is a huge damper on your daily activities and nightly rest. You must know the routine by now: you start to feel symptoms like a runny nose and headache; suddenly, you feel too icky to be in public; you stay home from work or school and curl up in bed with a box of tissues; and then, a few days later, the cold passes and you feel normal again.

However, what seems like the common cold may actually be more menacing. You could have a far more severe condition that is disguised as a cold then suddenly becomes much more severe. It is important to know when you just need rest and plenty of fluids to beat a sickness and when you need to visit a physician at a medical center like Elite Care of Central Florida. Here are the 4 signs that your cold is nothing ordinary and your health may actually be at serious risk.

1. Fever

Adults with a fever higher than 102 are dealing with far more than a common cold. While a fever is your body's way of overheating bacteria and viruses to eliminate them, this form of self-defense can also be self-damaging; a fever can be deadly when it climbs high enough. Of course, a high fever is also a sign that your body is dealing with far more than it can handle. You will need to see a doctor right away to take care of the problem and help your body return to a safe and healthy temperature.

2. Wavering in and out of Sickness

If you think that you have a common cold, there should be a clear pattern of symptoms arising slowly, worsening, limiting your abilities, and then eventually dissipating. However, if you feel yourself getting better, sick again, better, and then worse--essentially wavering in and out of sickness--then you likely have a more serious problem than a common cold. It is possible than while your immune system was busy dealing with the common cold another illness took hold. This is referred to as a superinfection, or a secondary illness that begins while you are battling a milder one. It is a good idea to visit with a doctor to be sure that nothing too intense has infected your system.

3. Bad Headaches

Headaches are usually your brain's way of signaling that something is wrong with you like dehydration, exhaustion, prolonged sun exposure, or strong hunger. However, headaches can also be a symptom of an illness. Various illnesses of different degrees of severity can cause headaches. Nobody likes headaches, but you should be able to handle them just fine. A common cold, for instance, can cause mild headaches. However, if a headache is so severe that it limits your focus or destabilizes your thinking, then you need to see a doctor. This can be a sign of meningitis, a severe upper-respiratory infection, or another illness that is too serious for you to handle on your own.

4. Extreme Weakness

Being sick makes you feel weak; some medical experts believe that this is a self-induced sense of tiredness--essentially, your brain signaling to you that you need rest and should not engage in strenuous activity. However, extremely achy muscles, constant fatigue, and difficulty getting out of bed are signs that you may have more than a simple sickness like the common cold. You might have the flu, a severe allergy problem, or worse.

If you have any of the 4 above signs of a significant illness, then you should visit a facility such as Elite Care of Central Florida as soon as possible. When it comes to your health, you should never ignore intense problems or irregular symptoms. At best, you will be diagnosed with a bothersome common cold and can go home knowing that all you need is some rest to take care of a stubborn cold. However, if you have a more hazardous condition you will need to begin treatment immediately. Find the answers from a medical professional before your condition spirals out of control.
