How to Winterize Your Yard

Home Improvement

The cold weather is setting in. The leaves are falling and the carefully manicured yard that you planted earlier this year is started to wilt. While you might be tempted to throw your hands up in the air and wait until it warms up again to deal with your landscaping, it’s important to winterize your yard. Not only will this keep your yard looking neat during the cold months, but it will make it easier for you to start planting again come spring time. From hiring a tree service in Houston, TX, to aerating your lawn, here are a few things you can do to get your yard ready for winter:

  1. Rake the leaves. While you can use the leaves as mulch, you will need to keep up with them. If you decide to keep the leaves on your lawn, you will need to ensure that the pieces are small. If you leave a layer of full-sized leaves on your yard, there is a chance that it will smother your lawn and cause problems. Plus, if they become moist, they can begin to rot.
  2. Keep mowing until things freeze. While your grass will eventually go dormant, it’s important to keep your lawn trimmed until that happens. You won’t need to mow your lawn weekly as you did during the summer. However, try to keep to a 10-14 day mowing schedule. Then, keep it as short as is recommended for your specific type of grass. This will reduce the chance of fungus appearing once the warm weather returns.
  3. Aerate while your grass is still green. Winter is the best time to aerate your lawn. Before the ground freezes, be sure to perform aeration. It will help to break up dry soil and allow the nutrients and water to seep in. Once it reaches the roots, it will stay there all winter long. Then, once spring rolls around, your lawn will sprout up greener and more vibrant than ever.
  4. Clear out the garden. Perennial plants should be cared for until frost comes. Be sure to prune and cut perennials back as needed. Once the time comes, remove the plants and put them in your compost pile.
  5. Get the water out of your pipes. Be sure to unhook hoses and blow the water out of your sprinkler system. By using compressed air, you can remove all signs of moisture from your sprinkler pipes. This will keep pipes and hoses from freezing and being damaged over the winter months. Frozen pipes can also lead to leaks which can cause flooded basements. Protect your sprinklers and your home by prepping them this winter.
  6. Prep the soil for next year. Fall and winter is an excellent time to put mulch, fertilizer, and compost down. This will give it time to settle into the soil and get it prepped for the next year of planting.
  7. Trim your trees. If you notice that you have trees that have dead branches, winter is a great time to trim them. This will allow them to grow back even healthier once they wake up and begin to grow again during the spring time. Dead branches can be a safety issue, especially if they’re near your home or power lines as they are more likely to break in strong wind or under a layer of snow or ice.
  8. Hire a professional. If you are worried about winterizing your yard, don’t do it by yourself. Instead, hire it out. By leaving your yard in the hands of experts, you can rest assured that things will be done correctly. Plus, you will be able to learn about the best ways to prepare your yard for the next time winter rolls around.

Take the time to prune, trim, and mulch your yard before things begin to freeze. Whether you decide to winterize your yard by yourself or hire a tree service Houston, TX, your yard will grow back better than ever come spring time.
