Common Urgent Care Services

For a long time, the only place you could go for medical treatment outside of office hours was the ER. Not only was this a really expensive trip, but you sat there for hours while people with real emergencies got the care they needed. Luckily, health care providers saw the need for a clinic that was in-between the general practitioner's office and the emergency room, which led to the creation of urgent care in Reno. If you've never heard of, let alone been to, an urgent care center, here are a few things you should know about them and the services they provide.

No Appointment Necessary

In most cases, urgent care centers operate on a walk-in basis. Though there are many that do make appointments, none will turn you away for not having one. So, if you have a kitchen accident that require stitches, don't worry about calling ahead; they'll take care of you. One of the reasons urgent care centers exist is to treat sudden injuries or illnesses that your doctor doesn't have time to treat. Despite the fact that people want to believe their doctor will always have time for them, the truth is, it is rare you'll get to see your actual doctor when you need him or her the most.

Figuring Out Fevers

Getting sick is a part of life that no one will escape. Thankfully, most sicknesses are mild and your body can fight them off with relative ease. While colds are usually not a reason to visit the doctor, fevers are a little different. First and foremost, don't let fevers scare you. Fevers are your body's natural response to foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses. Perhaps the most well-known cause of fever is the flu. Other common reasons for fevers include urinary tract infections and ear infections. In adults, fevers of 103 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, or fevers that have lasted more than 7 days, are a cause for concern. If fevers are accompanied by other symptoms such pain during urination, severe pain anywhere in the body, trouble breathing, etc. they are also a cause for concern and the patient should be taken to a doctor. The rules for children are different so, in the event that a baby or child has a fever, call the doctor for more information.

Sprains and Strains

Another part of life you're unlikely to escape is injury. Whether you cut your hand making dinner or sprain your ankle playing football, chances are you will eventually need a mending hand. While not all sprains and strains need medical attention, the bad ones do. In most cases, the reason to take a sprain to the doctor is to make sure it isn't something worse, like a break or fracture. In general, you only need to see the doctor for a sprain if you can't control the pain with over-the-counter medications or if elevation and ice don't seem to help with the swelling. You should also see an urgent care doctor if the pain doesn't begin improving within 7 days.

Stitches or Band-Aids?

While sprains and strains are generally not injuries that need immediate medical care, wounds usually are. As most people know, small cuts, scrapes and burns usually only need mild cleaning and a small dressing. The trick is identifying wounds that require medical attention. In general, if the wound is a 1/4 inch or more deep, you need to go to the doctor. Another sign you should visit an urgent care in Reno is if the wound continues bleeding after 15 minutes of constant pressure.
