Tips for Cutting Down All Your Utility Bills

Home Improvement

Nobody likes getting those utility bills every month; even less pleasant is seeing those same bills draining your bank account over and over again. If your utility bills are just too high for you to handle, then you may be looking for ways to cut down on all of them. This article will offer you a few tips for cutting down on each of your utility bills so that you can keep more money in your pocket.

Electricity

Electricity runs countless different items in your home: your lights, fans, electronics, appliances, and more. With it responsible for so much of the power that runs through your house, it may seem impossible to cut down any significant amount. However, there are ways to do just that. Here are some ideas:

  1. Invest in a solar power system in Seattle. It may be a high upfront cost, but there are many rebates to help offset this, and the solar panels will quickly pay for themselves by eliminating your electric bill altogether.
  2. Unplug chargers and electronics when they're not being used. Simply leaving your phone's charger plugged in will use up electricity, even when your phone isn't charging. Unplug these cords and any other electronic devices when they're not being used. This is especially true when you're leaving for a vacation. Unplug everything you can think of to save money while you're gone.
  3. Be sure to turn off lights whenever you leave a room. Leaving a light bulb burning in an unoccupied room may not seem like a big deal, but the cost will add up over time.

Water

You use it to wash your dishes, take care of your personal hygiene, clean your clothes, cook, and drink. However, there are still many ways that you can cut back on the use of water in your home.

  1. Install low-flow toilets and shower heads in your bathrooms. These will pay for themselves quickly by reducing the amount of water your family uses every day.
  2. Fix any small leaks quickly. Even if the dripping sound doesn't annoy you, that slow leak can be putting a slow leak in your pocketbook too. Get it fixed so that your money doesn't go to waste.
  3. Take showers instead of baths. Showering will use a lot less water. To save even more water, turn off the shower while you are lathering up your hair or shaving your legs instead of just letting it run unnecessarily. Then you can turn the water back on to rinse off the soap and shampoo when needed.

Gas

Gas is often used in a home to power the water heater, heating system, and certain appliances like the stove or even the fireplace. Though it is not used as often in the home as electricity and water are (in most cases), it can still rack up a decent monthly bill. Here's how to cut back on natural gas consumption:

  1. Turn the heater down a few degrees. Even if it means having to wear a jacket around your home, it is well worth this small sacrifice when you're saving money every month.
  2. Burn wood in your fireplace. With just a few simple changes of your fireplace's inset, you can convert it to burn wood instead of gas. You can still use the gas to help get the fire started, but once the wood is burning, you can turn it off and let nature take its course. This will also help you to keep your home warm without running your heater constantly.

Following these few tips will help you to save a lot of money over time, even if you need to invest in low-flow appliances or a solar power system in Seattle. These costs will still give you a great return on your investment.
