7 Ways to Save Energy in Your Mobile Home

Real Estate

Mobile homes are a popular option among home buyers who are shopping for a place to live on a budget. Mobile homes dealers in Caddo Mills offer a wide variety of homes at a significantly lower price than traditional homes, making them perfect for singles or families just starting out. However, many mobile homes--especially older models--tend to be very inefficient when it comes to using energy. This leads to high energy bills month after month, which can add up. Here are 7 ways to make your mobile home more energy efficient.

Seal Cracks

If you own an older mobile home, there are likely cracks around the windows, doors, and roof letting in hot or cold air. Small cracks are easy to fix on your own with caulk or weather stripping. You may not be able to see these cracks, but you can often feel them if you put your hand next to them. Larger cracks often come from storm damage and will require more time and effort to fix.

Add Insulation

It takes special effort to insulate mobile homes. That’s because there is usually very little space in the walls and roof, where insulation in most buildings and homes is located. However, it is possible to insulate these areas, though it’s usually best left to a professional. Also be sure to insulate the belly of the mobile home.

Add a Skirt

If your mobile home doesn’t already have a skirt around the base, installing one can save you a significant amount of money on your energy bills. If you do have a skirt in place, make sure it’s in good condition and fix any cracks you find. Not only does this make your home more insulated, it prevents rodents and other pests from trying to gnaw their way into your home. You can also add a layer of insulation to your skirt to keep hot or cold air from seeping into your home.

Service Your HVAC System

Maintaining your HVAC system by keeping it clean and in good working order, cuts down drastically on operating costs. Have your system inspected and cleaned at least once a year. It will run more efficiently and last longer than a dirty system. Also be sure to change the filter at least every 2 months or more often if you have pets.

Replace Your Appliances

Many older mobile homes still use very inefficient light bulbs and other appliances. Start replacing these a few at a time, and you’ll immediately start to see your energy bill go down. Once you finish with your light bulbs, move onto other appliances like your refrigerator or washing machine. New, energy efficient models run at a fraction of the cost of older models.

If you can’t afford to replace your appliances, find ways to use them less. Dry your clothes on a clothesline instead of in the dryer. Only use your dishwasher and washing machine for full loads. There are many ways to cut back on the amount of energy you use every day.

Replace the Windows and Doors

Your windows and doors are some of the areas in your home that are most prone to leaks and energy loss. To make your home more insulated, you may want to consider replacing the windows and doors with more energy efficient models. This is especially true in older homes, which were typically built with less efficient materials than today’s homes. Talk to mobile homes dealers in Caddo Mills to see what options are available for your home.
