Keep Your Home Critter Free This Winter

Business

No matter how cute they might seem, bats, rats, and mice have no business living in your home during the cold season. However, you might be unknowingly housing them. If you don’t want these pesky roommates hunkering down in your abode this season, there are a few things you can do. Before you need pest control in Greensboro, try these tips to help keep the critters out during the winter.

  1. Move your wood pile. If you have a wood-burning stove that heats your home, be sure to keep your wood as far away from your house as possible. While it might be convenient to have the wood pile leaning against the back wall of your house, it could be inviting unwanted critters inside. The grooves and cracks in between the logs provide a perfect place for mice, rats, and other pests to make a home during the cold season. Then, as the winter wears on, they just might begin to dig and borough into your home. To avoid this invasion, try to keep your pile of wood at least 20 feet away from your home.
  2. Keep your trash sealed up tight. It’s cold outside, which means taking bags of trash out to the can is a lot less likely to happen. No one wants to get bundled up in order to take the trash all the way outside, do they? While it might seem easier to leave a pile of trash right outside your garage door instead of securing it in the garbage can, it could end up causing a problem. Rodents can smell food from a far distance. So, if your garbage is left uncovered, they will find it. Once they find it, they will hunker down and get cozy. Break the habit of leaving your garbage out in the open. Be sure to put it in the trash can and put the lid on tight. This will seal out rodents and force them to find food elsewhere.
  3. Clean up your yard. Trash and clutter provide the perfect places for critters to hide out for the winter. Before it gets cold, be sure to clear out leaves and any other dead foliage. Otherwise, you may find that pests borough down underneath and take shelter.
  4. Check the perimeter of your home. Every so often, it’s best to take an inventory of your home’s perimeter. Pay special attention to your crawl space and basement. If you notice any cracks or holes, it’s best to seal them up immediately. Otherwise, critters could be making your home their home during the cold months. Also, be sure to examine your attic thoroughly. If you notice that there are any animal droppings in your insulation, that’s a good indicator that there is an access point somewhere. Pay close attention to any holes or openings that pests could be using to enter your home.
  5. Examine your chimney. Cracks in your chimney could be the perfect places for mice to hide out. Plus, if you don’t have a grate or a cap on top of your chimney, you could find that bats are hiding out there. Before lighting your fire during the cold season, be sure to thoroughly examine your chimney to ensure that no critters have nestled in.

If you find that your home has been the victim of a rodent invasion, consider calling in the professionals. A company who specializes in pest control in Greensboro can help to keep the situation under control. Critters and pests have no place in your home during the cold season. By taking the necessary measures, you can keep your home warm and rodent-free throughout the winter months.
