This summer has been one for the books. With party after party, your pool has seen some good times. Now it’s time to hang up your bathing suit and get your pool ready for winter. Grab your pool skimmer, brush, chemicals, and balancers and pay attention to these tips for swimming pool maintenance in John’s Creek to get your pool ready for the cold season. - Check the pH levels of your pool. Before doing anything else, it’s important to make sure that all of the chemical levels of your pool are where they should be. Your pool pH should be somewhere between 7.2 and 7.6. If it’s above or below that, you’ll need to add the necessary chemicals. Once it falls between the correct ranges, wait at least one hour before conducting more tests.
- Adjust the water hardness so it contains the correct level of calcium. All pools should contain a calcium level between 175 and 225 ppm. If you need to increase the amount of calcium, add a hardness increaser. Otherwise, you can decrease the level by draining some of the pool water and refilling it with water that has low calcium levels.
- Check the chlorine levels of the pool. Chlorine is necessary to keep your pool water sanitary. Over time, chlorine can lose its effectiveness due to the sun’s rays and other circumstances. It’s important to adjust your stabilizer level to 30 ppm and the chlorine level between 1 and 4 ppm.
- Clean and remove pool equipment. Remove all toys, accessories, ladders, and diving boards, and wipe them down before storing them for the season.
- Use a skimmer to remove all debris from the surface of the water, and be sure to clean out the skimmer baskets.
- Clean the pool walls and the floor with a stiff bristled brush. This removes any scum and debris that could be causing problems.
- After cleaning, you may need to add stain and metal control chemicals. Depending on your pool, you may also need to add granular chlorine and allow it to circulate for 6 hours before adding the algaecide.
- Clean the filtration system. Whether you have a cartridge filter, sand filter, or diatomaceous earth filter, each needs to be cleaned before closing your pool for the season. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure that you perform the cleaning correctly.
- Drain the pool to the appropriate level. Every pool should be drained below the skimmer opening. If your pool is painted or has a natural finish with a solid pool cover, drain the waterline to 6 inches below the opening. Plaster pools with solid covers can be drained to hit 1 to 6 inches below the skimmer. For vinyl-lined pools, lower the water to 1 inch below the skimmer opening. If your pool has a mesh cover or no cover at all, it’s still important to lower the water. In fact, you should drain the water to 18 to 24 inches below the skimmer opening.
- Finally, remove all of the fittings and install freeze plugs, then shut off the filter pump and install the pool cover.
If you are feeling overwhelmed by all of the steps that should be taken to close your pool up for the summer, don’t do it yourself. Hire out your swimming pool maintenance in John's Creek during both the summer and cold seasons. Then you can be sure that your water is handled correctly no matter what the temperature is outside.
