Complied by Leah Linhares A collaborated winning entry by Henning Larsen Architects, SLA and Tyréns will be the face of Uppsala’s new town hall… With its transparent architecture, the new town hall in Uppsala, Sweden, proposes to enter into a dialogue with its citizens; greeting them inside through a passage running through the ground floor of the building. Covered with a great glass roof, the courtyard makes up the heart of the building, where public services and programs will be situated. A sculptural edifice in the centre of the courtyard connects old and new departments with footbridges at different levels; with the town hall meeting and conference facilities planned here. This mixed-use building will be home to 1,500 flexible work places, a cafe with outdoor serving, a restaurant, shops, conference facilities, a space for public and private exhibitions and events. Adding to this modern environment is the central building, where knowledge sharing and cross-disciplinary problem solving are the proposed key aspects. With construction estimated to begin in 2017 and completed in 2020, the project is a refurbishment and an addition to the existing town hall, which was only partly completed in accordance with the original drawings. Henning Larsen Architects' proposal builds upon the competition proposal from 1957 and completes, with an L-shaped building, the original intention of a closed town block. Adjudged by the jury as the proposal, which convincingly unites functional demands with architectural quality, the design keeps the towns people in mind, making it welcoming, functional, at the same time, preserving the architectural value of the existing building in a very elegant way.
