Although grass lawns are familiar and visually appealing, they can also be time consuming and difficult to care for. And when you don’t have enough time to spend on them, they wind up full of weeds, dead grass, and other problems. Not only that, the fertilizers and pesticides they need are expensive and pollute the environment. Here are 5 alternate ideas for your landscape design in Atlanta, GA. Groundcover Groundcover plants come in a variety of styles, but all of them grow low to the ground so they don’t have to be cut regularly like grass. They require occasional weeding, especially during the first year, but need relatively little maintenance overall. Because they provide shade better than grass, they help your soil retain moisture and protect it against sudden changes in temperature. Mulch Certain areas of your yard, such as your trees and gardens, can be filled in with mulch to give your property a neater, more professional look. Grass doesn’t grow well in these areas anyway, and it can leave your yard looking ragged and untidy. Like groundcover, mulch also benefits the plants it surrounds by protecting the soil against temperature change and moisture loss. It also keeps out most weeds and requires practically zero maintenance. Flower Beds One way to make your lawn stand out is to replace sections of it with large beds of shrubs and flowers. Although these require more maintenance, their bright colors give you something to enjoy all spring and summer. If you want to cut down on the amount of gardening you have to do, choose a few native perennials that don’t need to be pruned as they grow. Ornamental Grasses Ornamental grasses have exploded in popularity over the last couple of decades. They are tall grasses that generally don’t have to be cut until the end of the season, and they are good at choking out weeds. They generally prefer full sunlight to shade, but are relatively adaptable and hardy. They are usually used as garden accents, but can cover larger sections of your yard if you prefer.
