With ‘getaway’ time occupying a prime slot in hectic lifestyles, a weekend home in the skies sounds like just the rejuvenation one can opt for! Rotterdam’s architectural practice MVRDV and co-architects KAI Architects from Taiwan have conceptualized and built ‘Y House’ – a 330 sq. m. villa - weekend retreat in Northeast Tainan. Standing like a beacon in the nondescript surrounds, this iconic structure comprises four floors of narrow tubular built form that spread out into a ‘Y’ above; cradling an open-to-sky pool in its alphabetical depression. A single family residence, the plan accommodates the private areas – master, children’s and guest bedrooms in the stem of the ‘Y’, whilst the living dining spaces are prioritized in the upper volume. Access is convenienced with stairs and an elevator riding through the Y House. Designed on a semi-floating deck, above the dining, the living area has seating that integrates with a bookshelf along one of the sloping walls. Similarly, the dining area too, follows an unconventional approach, as it stands sandwiched between two tribunes that lead to the solarium and the changing rooms before reaching up to the rooftop pool. Incidentally, this area doubles up the space, making it ideal for relaxation and extra storage. The ambience of the entire building is cultivated from ground up, where a tranquil pool with small gardens and stepping stone pathways adhere to Feng Shui principles of design as they cocoon a garden-tea room on the ground level, making it ideal for entertaining guests. With large circular windows puncturing the concrete shell, letting in plenty of natural light and keeping the interior airy, one cannot but be reminded of the American cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants; of course, solely for the surface appearance! check out the visuals on indiaartndesign.com
