Before you can hang them, you must decide on the right curtains. Ask yourself if you want your curtains to block the sun completely or if you want them to let light filter through. Do you want a heavy material like velvet or curtains with blackout lining, or are you looking for something more natural like linen or cotton curtains? Make a decision about how low you want your curtains to hang After you’ve chosen the type of window coverings you want, you’ll need to start measuring. Think of your curtains like a suit – you don’t necessarily need them tailored to the exact length and width you want, but they’ll look much nicer if you do. Start by measuring your windows and then decide if you want floor length curtains, which are the preference of most people. However, if you want what’s known as café style curtains, you’ll only measure from above the window to just below the frame. Consider where you want your curtains to hang from No matter where your curtains hang to, you’ll still have choices about where they hang from. If you want your room to seem taller, then consider hanging your curtain rod as much as six inches above the frame of the window. Make sure you’re also taking your hardware into consideration. Whether you’re using hooks, rings, pockets, tabs, or grommets, they’ll all effect the length and type of curtain rod you need. Now measure the width you need Do you want your curtains to look sleek and tailored when they’re closed, or do you want them full and dramatic? Generally speaking, you want to choose fabric that’s at least 1.5 times the width of your windows and up to 3 times as wide. Now you’re ready to hang your curtains As you can see from this guide, while it may seem that the hard part is the actual hanging of your drapes, the reality is that if you put in the time before you buy them, by the time they arrive you’ll know exactly where you want them to hang and how.
