Spring plant sales will soon be here as gardeners prepare for the upcoming season. The website Gardeners HQ stands ready to offer advice on how to grow more than 600 genera of plants including specific information on the more popular garden species. Many gardeners have likely already started planning this year’s design, as spring is a good time to begin growing and digging. Depending on what they plan to grow, they may have already started sowing seeds indoors as experts suggest starting many seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost. The soil often warms up enough in April for gardeners to plant most of their vegetable seeds, including cabbage, beans, and carrots. It’s also prime time to plant annual flowers. Gardeners, especially beginning gardeners, may struggle because of the lack of information on seed packets, on personally harvested seeds, and on seeds passed to them from friends. Plant biologist Dean Ravenscroft started the Gardeners HQ website to provide information for both gardeners and people with an interest in the plants growing around them. Ravenscroft studied plant biology up through the doctorate level and completed post-doctoral work at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Cologne, Germany. He also worked on the rice genome database at Cornell University. Among the Gardeners HQ’s guides, which cover over 600 genera of plants, are specific guides on the more popular garden species of flowers, herbs, vegetables, and fruits. Visitors to the site will find articles on gardening topics such as low maintenance plants, typical frost dates for the United States, and plants known to attract butterflies. Growing guides for flowers can be found both by their scientific and common names. Gardeners HQ organizes names in alphabetical order to make it easy to find information. Vegetable growers will also find plenty of information on popular vegetables including Brussels sprouts, carrots, and onions, amongst many others. There are guides on popular but not often discussed vegetables like okra, kale, and artichoke.
