For a small island, there’s a fantastic range of wildlife sights to see in Tenerife, and it’s absolutely perfect for families to enjoy. With glorious sunshine and a great choice of stunning holiday resorts, in Tenerife there’s never any chance that your young ones will get bored. Whether venturing by land or taking to the water, you won’t fail to be amazed by what the island has on offer – here are our team’s best picks. On Land The big cats at the Jungle Park have always been number one on my family’s list; jaguars and pumas are scene-stealers, although the exotic birds and chimpanzees certainly give them a run for their money! There are over 300 animals in the park, so there’s plenty for keeping the children entertained, including the chance to feed emus and watch sea lions perform acrobatics. Another top choice is a visit to the Camel Park, which is easy to reach by a free shuttle bus from many of the main resorts in Tenerife. This is not your average farm-park – chickens, goats and donkeys all rub shoulders with more than 60 camels! The best part is catching a ride, so don’t miss out – it’s a really fun family experience. By Sea There’s even more to explore by water, particularly if you’re looking to get a bit adventurous and take an under-the-sea dive with Submarines Safaris SL. Plunging 60 metres below sea level, your children will be spellbound by the wondrous displays of fish and manta rays you can watch floating by from one of the 22 window galleries. Back on the surface, but no less impressive, is a boating trip to watch the dolphins and whales that flock around Tenerife’s south coast. There are many companies offering excursions, but please do check first that you choose one associated with the Quality Tourism Service, as these companies make sure to follow recognised guidelines when taking eager watchers out to spot bottlenose dolphins, orcas and sperm whales. Where to Stay I would recommend two great family resorts in Tenerife to really maximise your stay: Iberostar Hotel Anthelia: this resort was made with families in mind, lying in a fantastic location. The Fañabé beach is very close by, although with its warmed freshwater pools with slides and pirate ship, you may not want to even venture off the hotel’s grounds! It also has a great variety of children’s clubs serving all age groups – ideal for giving yourselves that deserved break in the hotel spa. H10 Conquistador: larger than Hotel Anthelia, this resort has a huge range of seasonal activities for children to enjoy – no single day ever runs the same! The Conquistador is located near the Playa de las Americas, meaning it’s superbly situated to take advantage of all the wildlife on offer in the area. Whatever time of year you visit, you are sure to enjoy a wild time in Tenerife, with plenty for your little ones to explore – and this is only the tip of the iceberg.
