There’s a lot to be said for taking your summer holiday before the crowds of families and summer-sun tourists descend across most holiday destinations. If the places you’ve always wanted to go get too busy or too hot to visit in July or August, then think about booking a last minute break and getting away from it all this month instead. Here is my selection of the very best destinations to visit this June. Croatia It’s taken a while for most of Western Europe to catch on to the beauty and elegance of Croatia with its ancient buildings and stunning Mediterranean culture and buildings. But things have been changing, and the well-heeled have fallen for its Riviera-style charms. The prices are going up accordingly, so my advice is go now before the serious mass-tourism begins. From the beaches of the Dalmatian Coast to the sights and culture of the capital Dubrovnik, a trip to Croatia would be a truly worthwhile. The French Riviera Famous for its glitz and glamour, the beautiful coastal towns of Cannes, Nice, Antibes and St Tropez can be difficult to see beneath the swarms of sweating tourists in the summer peak months of July and August, so if you really want to appreciate its charms, June is the perfect month to visit. Swim in the Med, eat in some of the world’s classiest restaurants and hang out with the celebs in some of the hottest nightspots in the South of France. Positano and the Amalfi Coast There aren’t many people whose bucket list doesn’t include a visit to the famous Italian coast but, like the French Riviera, high summer is definitely not the time to go. Visit in June and you will find the beautiful coastal villages opening their arms to the early summer visitors and you will actually be able to explore this stunning region without too many crowds. Machu Picchu Okay, so this is one from my bucket list, but June is a great time to visit the ancient Inca city set high up in the Peruvian mountains. The weather at this time of year in the Andes is dry and not too hot: a perfect combination for hiking. I can’t guarantee that you won’t meet other tourists (there is no time of year that is entirely quiet here) but I’ve heard that a good trick is to get up early and have a look around before the tour groups arrive.
