Views, Vaporettos and Venetian Masks: A Teen Guide to Venice

Travel & Tourism
Venice is famed as one of the world’s most romantic destinations, but that’s not to say it’s only for couples. The city is a place for everyone; it makes for fantastic family break, particularly for those bringing teenage children in tow. Almost like visiting a living, breathing theme park, its unique qualities are sure to entrance even the surliest of teens. That’s not to mention the ease by which you can get from Venice airport to Venice – despite being built on water, the city is super-easy to navigate, making it great to explore without coming to any extra hassle!

Here are my recommendations for teen-friendly activities that catch some of the best views of the city, whether by canal, by tower or through the masks of its famously carnival-mad inhabitants, which will let your teens pick and choose their favourite sights whilst keeping things varied and easy-going.

Take to the Water

Of course, the canals are what it’s all about in Venice so taking in the city by water is the perfect way to explore its picturesque buildings and beautiful bridges, with plenty of great photo opportunities for your phone-happy teens to lap up and share with friends.

There are several options for canal trips. The most obvious is by gondola, which is certain to delight youngsters though may be less kind on your wallet – 40-minute long trips cost around €80. A better value for money option is to take a vaporetto, the city’s waterbuses, which run through all the main streets and across the lagoon. It’s a good idea to buy a day or several days pass – single journey tickets can be quite expensive, particularly if you end up making several journeys, whereas a pass (starting at €20 for a one-day travel card) allows you to travel on any service as often as you want on your given day. Even better, you can get hold of a three-day young person’s travel card for your teens at €22 (though you’ll also need to buy a Rolling Venice Card at €6 from any ACTV ticket counter or branch of the Venice Tourist Office before you can claim this pass).

Scale the Heights

There are more ways to take in the splendours of La Serenissima than just by water, however. Another spectacular perspective on the city is from the viewing platform at the top of the Campanile, the city’s famed tower on St Mark’s Square. Conveniently, there is a lift so there’s no room for any complaining! You’ll find plenty more stunning photo opportunities from up here, gazing out onto the Doge’s Palace, the terracotta roofs, and the lagoon – perfect for letting your kids pick out the features that interest them most. If you really want to get a bit of bang for your money, try to time your trip for the hourly bell-ringing – something of a deafening experience which is sure to give your teens a good buzz.

The King of Masks

There are many museums to be found throughout Venice, but if you’re looking for one in particular to add a touch of pizzazz and intrigue and which is guaranteed to entertain your teens, then make a visit to the Mondonovo Mask Museum (open 3-6pm daily, free admission). You’ll have no moans nor cries of boredom here – a former mask workshop, it’s filled with colourful displays with hundreds of items to keep you entertained, and you might even get an opportunity to meet the King of Masks himself. Make sure to spend some time afterwards in the gift shop – teens will love picking out souvenirs to bring back for their own parties!

How to Get There

Shuttle Direct’s transfer services are ideal for getting you from Venice airport to Venice with minimum fuss, maximum comfort and at fixed, low-cost prices. You can book a private transfer or shared shuttle service in advance to pick you up from the terminal at Venice airport – to Venice, it’s only a short hop across from the mainland. Who’d have thought taking your teens on holiday could be so simple?

Lukas Johannes is a driver for Shuttle Direct, the number one provider of shared and private airport transfers all over Europe and northern Africa. If you’re looking for an affordable transfer from Venice airport to Venice, Lukas and his colleagues can make sure that you and your luggage get to and from the airport swiftly and safely.
