Skiing trips take place in some of the most stunning wintery landscapes in the entire world, but it can be hard to appreciate this beauty when you are hurtling down a mountain at blistering speeds. This is one of the reasons that snowshoeing is such a wonderful activity. It allows you to explore these wild landscapes at a gentle pace so that you can enjoy the vistas and breathe in the crisp mountain air. There are lots of excellent places to try your hand at snowshoeing, but I think that the alpine resort of Courmayeur in northwest Italy is one of the best. It not only provides fan-tastic conditions, but there are also a handful of superb expeditions to choose from. Bonatti Refuge This lovely excursion provides breathtaking views of Mont Blanc and the Grandes Jo-rasses as you climb to an altitude of 439m. The route begins at the Val Ferret cross-country ski track and takes you into the valley where you will pass the Grandes Jorasses campsite and a picturesque chapel. Once you enter the valley, the route flattens out and you can enjoy epic views of Tête de Ferret before beginning your ascent. After reaching Lavachy, you continue North-East where you will enter pretty fir woods - head through these and you will eventually come to stunning snow-covered pastures. Climb the last segment for rewarding views of Mont Blanc and then complete the last few metres to reach Bonatti Refuge at 2,026m. Bertone Refuge A scenic and varied route setting off from a small village in front of Mont Blanc, the Ber-tone Refuge rises 664m with great views from the refuge - continue a little further for mesmerising views from the orientation table. Start the journey with a stroll alongside a gorgeous frozen lake and climb a slope until you reach the woods filled with beautiful red firs. You will soon reach a stone monument dedicated to Aosta Alpine Battalion. After a series of turns, you will see the La Thuile mountains before entering another set of woods. Things can get tricky here, but on the other side of the peak, you will find a peaceful area with snow-covered pastures. A slight climb from here and you will reach the Bertone Refuge and feel a great sense of accomplishment. How to Get There Fortunately, reaching the resort is simple and straightforward with a flight into Geneva. This 90-minute hop from London is offered by a handful of carriers throughout the week.
