How to Choose a Saxophone For a Beginner

Advice,Hobbies,Music
You’re reading this because you have come to the conclusion that you should start learning the saxophone. But before you begin you'll have an assortment of options to have a think about. Firstly, saxophones generally are not the most cost effective of instruments, which means you should try to start with a sax you'll be able to learn to play at a satisfying pace. Now this doesn’t necessarily translate to buying the most expensive one you can find, but you should know that some of the cheaper models might not have the same degree of playability that their more expensive counterparts offer.

There are four main types of saxophone: soprano – which has the highest pitch, then alto, tenor and baritone – which is at the lower range. The tenor saxophone is in the key of B flat, like the soprano, but is a full octave lower. Similarly, baritone sax is an octave below alto sax, with both being in the key of E flat.

Pupils are often urged in school to try the clarinet ahead of undertaking saxophone lessons. The clarinet requires more complicated fingering and therefore it's assumed if you can master this you'll make short work at advancing on the saxophone. Having said that, some believe its better to start with the saxophone because of its more gentle learning curve. The embouchure – the way in which you breath into the instrument - is assumed to be a little less tricky on the sax compared to other woodwind instruments. Given that both this and the standard reach of keys are more straightforward to play versus both the clarinet and the flute, a beginner saxophonist could produce a appealing sound out of their instrument more readily.

Of the four primary saxophones you will most commonly find alto saxophones for sale. It is definitely the instrument that nearly all newbies are encouraged to get started with due to its pitch. Novices tend to view it the to strike up a solid array of notes from as other types of sax require more onerous breath control. Additionally, the spread of keys is scaled-down on an alto and for that reason kids will likely have no difficulty in maintaining a good hold of it. The alto also happens to be the most frequently implemented type of saxophone in classical pieces and this is why there is a mass of music made for alto on the market.

Finally, the most essential point as regards to buying a saxophone is acquiring an example that you think may keep you committed to wanting to learn. They are certainly not the most affordable of instruments and consequently it's always worthwhile seeking advice from your local music store and trying out several different models before making your purchase while also looking at competitive prices of saxophones online. Ask about rental opportunities in store or from your music teacher, as many implement a try before you buy scheme which could save you a lot of money in the long run. Remember, learning any musical instrument is a discipline, but make sure you have fun as well because this will keep you practising and help you progress at a steady rate.
