1. Effective Study Tips: A Contrary Opinion
September 18, 2017

Among educators a large majority argue for a standard set of effective study tips used by successful students. But, it seems that Dunlosky, Rawson, Marsh, Nathan & Willingham (2013) do not agree. In their study, "Improving students' learning with effective learning techniques" published in Psychological Science in the Public Interest they evaluated ten of the most common study techniques with surprising results. In their article they divided the ten into three groups: 1) The least effective; 2) Moderately effective; and 3) Highly effective. In this article I will list the techniques included i... 2. Dynamic Learning and The Powers of a Positive Attitude
September 07, 2017

Dynamic Learning begins with the power of positive thinking. It is a simple idea that is not easy to carry out. To have a positive mental attitude (PMA) one must do a great deal of soul searching. One must clear the air of guilt and regrets. Over the course of this article I discuss the idea of PMA along with some steps for how to develop your personal PMA. I am going to ask you to something very weird right now. First of all, I want you to listen to your thoughts. Now tell me, what thoughts fill your head? Would you label them as positive, or negative? The Beginning Now let's s... (read more)

3. What Good is Note Taking without a Review Plan?
September 06, 2017

Note taking is a skill for studying smart that almost guarantees better grades. So many teachers insist that taking notes can only be accomplished in one way. Whether that way be making lists, drawing mind maps, outlining, drawing pictures or some combination of all or some of these, note taking is often taught as the teacher's favorite approach. The thing is, that taking notes is a highly personal effort and often fits into the note taker's learning style. I advocate a different approach. Rather than try to teach a 'perfect' way to take notes, I suggest a format that leads to reviewing t... (read more)

4. Learning Styles: Knowing Yours in order to Study Smart
September 05, 2017

One of the more important insights about learning in the past 50-years is the understanding that learning styles make a real difference in how we learn. If you are a logical/mathematical learner then forcing yourself into a visual corner does no good and, perhaps, causes harm. If the goal is to learn, then it makes perfect sense to study within your own style of learning. Discovering Your Personal Learning Style There are any number of self-administered tests to accurately uncover your own learning style. We know that learning styles are not singular. There is always a dominant learning ... (read more)

5. Dynamic Learning and Mental Attitude
August 30, 2017

When thinking about a dynamic person one thinks of one with a positive mental attitude and driven to accomplish their goals. When it comes to dynamic learning, one may be dynamic if goals are set and one has the mental attitude to get things done. This is, however, easier said than done. Today I wish to discuss these two aspects of studying, setting goals and developing the positive mental attitude to perform. Setting Goals Setting goals for studying should be an easy task. But for most people this is not the case. Goals must have two factors to prove effective. First, a goal must be cha... (read more)

6. Three Reasons to Not Study Hard
August 22, 2017

The age old question for students revolves around study. Should one study hard or study smart? So many students hear the empty 'motivational' advice to study harder. This advice often falls on deaf ears. My goodness, the student thinks, I already study as hard as I can. If this were good advice, why do so many students who study hard get average grades? In this brief article, I will share three reasons why one should almost never study hard. One should never 'pull an all-nighter.' Waiting until the last minute to study is always counterproductive. The three reasons considered here are: 1) stu... (read more)

9. Study Hard? 2 Tips for Learning to Study Smart
August 15, 2017

So many people tell us to study hard and success in school will follow. Study hard, however, is a vague term filled with pitfalls. I can envision telling a student to study hard after a poor test score. In the student's mind studying hard is not the problem. Comprehension, the clear understanding of material is. So studying hard fails to make an impression. What makes more sense is a complete change from study hard to study smart. In this article I suggest two ways to make that shift, a shift that will bring success to any student. Tip 1: Develop a Passion for Learning It doesn't matter... (read more)

10. Study Hard or Study Smart
August 06, 2017

How many times have you heard, "Study hard to succeed in school?" I would venture to say many times. The problem remains that the term 'study hard' remains undefined. Does it mean to put in more hours studying? Must one add supplemental material to assigned reading? Is pulling an all-nighter the answer? To each of these questions the simple answer is a resounding no. In fact, these, and many other related questions, fail to properly define the problem at hand. It is difficult to tell someone who completed a project that they needed to work harder. It is likely that working hard was not ev... (read more)
