A musical instrument is constructed or used for the purpose of making the sounds of music. In principle, anything that produces sound can serve as a musical instrument. The history of musical instruments dates back to the beginnings of human culture. The academic study of musical instruments is called organology. The date and origin of the first device of disputed status as a musical instrument dates back as far as 67,000 years old; artifacts commonly accepted to be early flutes date back as far as about 37,000 years old. However, most historians believe determining a specific time of musical instrument invention to be impossible due to the subjectivity of the definition. Musical instruments developed independently in many populated regions of the world. However, contact among civilizations resulted in the rapid spread and adaptation of most instruments in places far from their origin. By the Middle Ages, instruments from Mesopotamia could be found in the Malay Archipelago and Europeans were playing instruments from North Africa. Development in the Americas occurred at a slower pace, but cultures of North, Central, and South America shared musical instruments. In pursuit of understanding who developed the first musical instruments and when, researchers have discovered various archaeological evidence of musical instruments in many parts of the world. Some finds are as much as 67,000 years old, but their status as musical instruments is often in dispute. Consensus solidifies about artifacts dated back to around 37,000 years old and later. Only artifacts made from durable materials or using durable methods tend to survive. As such, the specimens found cannot be irrefutably placed as the earliest musical instruments.[1]

Learning how to play an instrument, whether it is guitar (lead or rhythm), bass, drums or keyboard etc is a massive achievement, but learning to play is just the first step as when we learn to play an instrument we learn it for a reason and most of the time this reason is to form or join a band, this is because, like all art forms, music is all about giving.

8. Why do people snore?
January 29, 2010
Why do people snore?
The reasons for snoring are varied, an unfortunate combination of lifestyle, physiological and hereditary factors that can combine until an annoying and sometimes serious problem can result. The main source of problems are the soft tissues at the back of the nose and mouth that relax with sleep and then begin to vibrate and flap as these tissues act as a reed in a musical instrument to produce the sometimes very loud noise that we call snoring. The part of the mouth that causes the most noise is the soft palate at the back of the mouth and if the majori... (read more)

10. Becoming a REAL guitar hero
January 28, 2010
One of the more incredible recent marketing phenomena has been the success of ‘guitar playing’ software, whereby the games user can feel as if he or she is playing one of the electric guitars in a band. Whilst this can be great fun it is surely no match for playing the real instrument.
At Fret Music we would like to encourage everybody, including those who would claim not to be ‘musical’, to start playing real instruments, including electric guitars. If you love listening to music (and have the patience to get to grips with computer games!) you will be amazed at how quickly you can make p... (read more)

Those new to the world of electric guitars are often excited about becoming more acquainted with one of the most iconic, versatile and fanatically loved of all instruments. 12. A brief introduction to acoustic guitars
January 27, 2010
Acoustic guitars can add a refreshing dimension to guitar playing, either providing scope to impress with a solo performance, or through adding an ‘unplugged’ quality to a band’s set.
There are generally two kinds of acoustic guitar: classical guitars, usually with wider necks and nylon strings; and steel-stringed acoustic guitars.
Both types of guitar can be used to play a spectrum of acoustic musical styles. The classical guitar however is the instrument of choice for the player of classical guitar music, largely because of its warm tones. It is also the required instrument for tho... (read more)

14. It's Time to Learn How to Play the Guitar
January 25, 2010
You just bought, or were given, your first guitar. – “So what’s next?” you might ask. Well, you might take instruction from a community guitar teacher; but do you have a clue as to what YOU aspire to perform on the instrument. Generally speaking, most folk who start out to play an instrument has in mind an actual technique or performer they desire to imitate, and would be keen on it if they could possibly contract lessons that would teach them in the technique or musical genre in which they are interested.
But too often the lessons you get are, as a rule, not within the direction you aspi... (read more)

16. What is Perfect Pitch?
January 25, 2010
What is perfect pitch? You are probably already aware that perfect pitch, also known as absolute pitch, is the ability to identify or recreate a musical note without using a reference. Some musicians are particularly good at singing any pitch at will, others are great at transcribing anything they hear or tuning an instrument to concert pitch using perfect pitch. Although the ability is quite rare (about 1 in 10,000), many musicians who have it are adept at both identifying and recreating notes. Perfect Pitch Theory What is more important is the question of “how?”. We all know what p... (read more)

17. Creativity And Playing The Guitar
January 24, 2010
It is not enough to just play guitar chords, pluck notes, and learn songs. When playing the guitar, it is also important to make way for your own musical creativity. Many guitarists know how to play their instrument when sheet music is present, but when asked to plunge into a moment of improvisation, they get stuck and do not know what to do. On the other hand, some great guitar performers may not be entirely skilled in reading sheet music, but they know their guitar by heart. This familiarity and emotional closeness with their guitar helps them to create instant guitar solos, riffs, and somet... (read more)

January 14, 2010
The Age of Music
Music is ageless. Musicians are too. The only requirement necessary to play a musical instrument like the guitar is a reasonable degree of dexterity in the hands, the ability to retain the content of each guitar lesson and a natural love of music. This means that few individuals are really too old to learn to play guitar who show an avid interest in doing so.

22. Grownup Acoustic Guitar Lessons
January 14, 2010
There’s a difference between guitar lessons for children, teenagers and adults. For the most part children haven’t developed musical tastes and learning any instrument encourages a lot of the right things.
Teenagers have music they like and at their age they most often just want to play what they hear. Once they begin to match their favorite players on some level the lessons tend to fall off in favor of the jam session.
Adults have musical tastes that are certainly varied and there is usually a level of sophistication attached to one or more of grown-ups’ musical preferences.
