Pip Martin is the founder of The Wine Adventure. He began his career in wine as a Manager in Harrods Wine Department where he looked after the wine department team and travelled around the UK running wine tastings for private clients.

After Harrods, Pip went on to become Corporate Events Manager at Richard Branson's online wine merchant, Virgin Wines. During his time at Virgin, in little over 15 months, he organised and hosted over 200 wine events for Virgin's corporate clients, including the BBC, Morgan Stanley, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and JP Morgan.

In 2004 Pip was shortlisted as one of 4 finalists for the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award from Startups.co.uk, the business awards endorsed by Patricia Hewitt, then Secretary of State for Trade and Industry. He was also the winner of the 2004 Shell LiveWIRE London award for Sector Knowledge.

In 2005, Pip became a contributor to Sky One's Taste program, and in 2006 his media work included wine presenting on BBC1's Saturday Kitchen.

In 2007, Pip was included in The Observer and Courvoisier Future 500 (in the drinks category). His international work in this year and 2008 included hosting wine events in Spain, Russia, and South Africa.

1. Top 10 tips for buying wine en primeur
May 11, 2011

We felt the time was ripe to pen an article about en primeur. This subject seems to cause much confusion and is a frequent source of conversation at our corporate wine tasting events.

In its simplest form, buying en primeur means you are purchasing wine before it is bottled but after it is m...

2. Finalising wine choices for a corporate wine tasting
April 15, 2011

In this week's flurry of event activity we felt the time was right to pen an article about wine selection for corporate wine tasting events.

Event bookers have much to consider when they book corporate wine tastings (e.g. venue, timings, food service, registration e.t.c.). It's not surprisin...

3. Gauging alcohol levels when tasting wine blind
March 10, 2011

In our corporate wine tastings (which are usually conducted blind) we often suggest participants think of themselves as vinous versions of Sherlock Holmes.

Blind wine tasting is all about deciphering clues in the wine to reveal its identity (unless of course you are tasting blind to assess q...

4. Low and no alcohol wine- an insight
January 15, 2011

OK, hands up, despite covering most of the conceivable themes in our corporate wine tasting events, the one topic we have not covered has been wines of the lower alcohol ilk.

These wines have gained considerable traction in recent years as not only are many of us seeking less alcohol in our...

5. Fruit wine - how it's made
January 15, 2011

Of all the questions asked in our corporate wine tasting events, variants of the below are perhaps the most prevalent:

"Does this wine smell of blackberries because it's made from blackberries?"

Wine buffs scoff at such pronouncements (conventional wines are made from fermented grape...

6. Champagne - how it's made
January 09, 2011

There are many different ways to create sparkle in a bottle of wine, but the process used in Champagne is regarded as the best, and, of all the options available, is certainly the most time consuming.

In Champagne the process is allowed to be called the Méthode Champenoise (though in practis...

December 05, 2010

If ever you want to go to a wine destination full to the brim with vitality, history and character, go to Porto in Northern Portugal.

This city, the country's second largest, is of course best known for its eponymous fortified wine, Port. The Portuguese are extremely hospitable and Port Hous...

9. A year in the life of a vine
October 29, 2010

When are grapes actually plucked from the vine? What goes into tending a vineyard? Viticulture (the science and practice of grape growing) is a key part of wine production. Careful, methodic and considered husbandry in the vineyard is where the process of bringing a wine to life starts. So what happ...

10. Estate profile: Quinta Vale Das Escadinhas, Dão, Portugal
September 25, 2010

Some countries, despite their good standing in the world of wine, often stump people when it comes to forming a complete picture of them. Portugal is a good example of this. Most people (not unfairly) think of the idiosyncratic fortified wines of Port, and the sweetish, light, confected roses of Mat...
