1. Screen of the Week 05/22/2012: Explosive Stocks Under $10
May 23, 2012
This screen is a bit of a departure from my normal stock screens.
Usually I require my screens to have a minimum price of $10 per share.
But I do at times scan for stocks under $10. And that's one of the screens I'm running for myself right now.
Penny Stocks
One dollar is a common threshold when screening for stocks. A lot of investors actively avoid penny stocks due to the speculative nature, the often wide bid/ask spreads, and the excessive volatility that is all too common in stocks under $1.00.
But some, of course, work out spectacularly well. And that's probably w... (read more)

2. Earnings Preview 05/18/2012: Earnings Season Quieting Down
May 21, 2012
Earnings Preview – Week of May 21st
It will be a relatively quiet week on the earnings front, as there are only a few reports left before we close the books on the first quarter earnings season. This turned out to be a positive reporting season, with the growth rate, surprises and percentage of beats coming ahead of pre-season expectations.
We will get reports from about 100 companies this week, including 17 companies in the S&P 500, which will take the complete tally of S&P 500 results to 495 by the end of the week.
The economic calendar this week is on the light side as well... (read more)

3. Earnings Preview 05/11/2012: Big Week for Econ News
May 14, 2012
Earnings Preview – Week of May 14th
The first quarter reporting season is winding down, with the bulk of the earnings season now behind us. We have already seen results from 452 of the S&P 500 companies thus far, and there is a lot to like this earnings season. We will get results from around 195 companies this week, including 21 from the S&P 500.
Total earnings for the 452 companies that have already reported results (as of Friday, 05/11) are up a strong 7.9% from the year-earlier period, with 65.5% of the reports coming ahead of expectations. Since the market has already passed jud... (read more)

4. Screen of the Week 05/08/2012: A Relative Price Strength Screen for Beating the Market
May 09, 2012
Over the last few weeks, I have found myself screening for stocks with the best Relative Price Changes in an effort to determine whether a stock is good or not.
Of course earnings growth and valuations are important. But if a stock is simply not responding or going down (worse than the market), something's wrong. Or at the very least, it's just simply not ready to move higher.
I've talked about this kind of stuff in the past – what investors consider to be their best stocks -- and the answer is: the ones performing the best, in other words, moving higher.
And it's the same here.... (read more)

6. Screen of the Week 04/24/2012: The Right Way to Find Growth and Value Stocks
April 25, 2012
Looking for growth and value is a winning combination.
Especially now, with concerns over slowing growth and rich valuations.
And while there are still plenty of companies out there with great growth rates and attractive valuations, it's getting harder to find stocks that fit squarely into both categories.
First off, Growth Investors focus on companies with great earnings growth. And this makes sense since earnings drive prices. But nobody wants to overpay for good growth.
Value Investors focus on low valuation metrics, like low P/Es for example. But many companies have low... (read more)

7. Earnings Preview Week of April 23rd: Earnings Season Hits Full Throttle
April 24, 2012
Earnings Preview – Week of April 23rd
We have a super-busy week coming up, with almost 900 companies coming out with results, including more than one-third of the S&P 500. By the end of next week, more than half of the S&P 500 companies will have come out with quarterly results.
While earnings will remain the primary focus during the week, we have a number of market-moving economic releases on deck, as well. For the most important economic report next week, you will have to wait till Friday morning when the first quarter 2012 GDP report will come out.
The Federal Reserve will ... (read more)

8. Screen of the Week 04/10/2012: Checklist for Picking Winning Stocks
April 19, 2012
I'm regularly asked how I go about picking winning stocks, especially now with the market's recent pullback.
The short answer is: I simply focus on what works.
Since there are over 10,000 stocks out there, you need a way to find the good ones.
And by focusing on what works vs. guesswork (or worse), you'll not only be able to pick winning stocks, but you'll be able to do so consistently. And that's really the key to success; having a repeatable way to find profitable stocks, again and again and again.
I run a lot of individual strategies. But I will often go thru a checklist... (read more)

9. Screen of the Week 04/17/2012: New Top 5 Sectors
April 19, 2012
It's that time again. Every few months, I like running this screen to find the new Top Sectors. And now it's especially timely after this recent pullback, which really wasn't that big a deal, but where more and more people are saying that we're looking at a sector rotation.
So, that being the case, it's important to see what new sectors and industries are being rotated into.
And since roughly half of a stock's price move can be directly attributed to the group that it's in, it's important to stay on top of this.
By definition, a strong Sector or strong Industry will have more of... (read more)

10. Titanium Metals Retained at Neutral
April 13, 2012
We maintain our Neutral recommendation on Titanium Metals Corporation. Its fourth-quarter 2011 earnings of 16 cents a share matched the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Revenues increased at a double-digit clip to $258.7 million, but missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Sales were boosted by higher volumes across melted and mill products, led by improved demand for titanium products in the commercial aerospace sector. The company expects this trend to continue in 2012. Titanium Metals witnessed increased demand in mill products in 2011. The company’s commercial aerospace customers sign... (read more)

11. Screen of the Week 03/27/2012: What's Your Stock's Price Target?
April 02, 2012
I know there are a lot of people out there who think the market may be running out of steam and, naturally, they're wondering if their stocks are as well.
Of course, there are others who are expecting another push to the upside, and they are wondering how high they should expect to see their stocks go.
But regardless of what you think may or may not happen to the market, everyone would like to have a better understanding of what their stock's potential price target is. And that's what we're going to talk about today.
You can do this by using either technicals or fundamentals. ... (read more)

12. Earnings Preview 03/23/2012: Shifting to First Quarter
March 27, 2012
Earnings Preview 3/23/12
The fourth quarter earnings season is over, but now we start the first quarter season. It is still very early in the game, but some firms with February fiscal period ends will start to report this week. There will be 90 firms reporting, but 9 of them will be members of the S&P 500.
Firms reporting this week include: Best Buy (BBY), Family Dollar (FDO), Lennar (LEN), McKesson (MCK), Mosaic (MOS), Paychex (PAYX) and Walgreens (WAG). That is an interesting cross-section of the economy and might offer some clues as to how the first quarter earnings season will... (read more)

13. Screen of the Week 03/20/2012: How to Use the Price to Sales Ratio for Finding Value
March 20, 2012
This week, I'm going to focus on the Price to Sales ratio for finding great stocks at great values.
The Price to Sales ratio is a useful valuation metric. And given the recent run-up in stocks, value (to me) is becoming more and more important.
In fact, aside from the Zacks Rank, if I could only use one item to screen and pick stocks with, this item would be the one.
Definition
Let's first start with a definition.
The Price to Sales ratio is simply: Price divided by Sales
If the Price to Sales ratio is 1, that means you're paying $1 for every $1 of sales the compa... (read more)

Firms reporting this week include Brown Foreman (BF.B), H&R Block (HRB) and Pall Corp. (PLL).
It will also be a busy week for economic data. Key reports include Durable Goods, Personal Income and Spending, The ISM Manufacturing Index, Auto Sales and the second look at fourth quarter GDP.

However, the results were ahead of the prior-year earnings of $23.3 million or 13 cents per share. 16. Screen of the Week 02/28/2012: A Company's First Profit Can Mean Big Gains for Investors
March 01, 2012
With first quarter earnings season mostly over, I've been running screens with the concept to find companies that have just recently shown their first quarterly profit within the last year.
The idea is to find companies that have not shown a profit for at least the previous 4 quarters, but have just recently produced their first profit this last quarter.
I run this screen after every earnings season. And here we are again.
Some of these companies will be relatively new, and this recent profit may be the only profit in the company's history so far.
Other companies may have a... (read more)

19. Screen of the Week 02/14/2012: Your Next Stock Should Be Making New Highs
February 17, 2012
Today I'm going to go over a simple screen with a powerful concept.
Buying stocks making new highs. (And yes, there are indeed stocks making news highs right now.)
I know some are reluctant to buy stocks making new 52 weeks highs. If you’re one of them, have you ever asked yourself why?
If a stock is making a new 52-week high, that's a good thing. Especially now.
I'm pretty sure that a person who dislikes buying stocks making new 52-weeks highs wouldn't be too upset if the stock he already owned broke out to new 52-week highs.
And why should he? Statistics have shown t... (read more)
