How It Works
Through this volunteer program, reading mentors are matched up with low-preforming students in kindergarten. Each volunteer meets with his or her designated student weekly for approximately 20 minutes, and can be matched with up to 3 students. As a volunteer, you are encouraged to continue working with your students as a reading mentor through the end of 3rd grade, with the goal of having your students reading fluently by the beginning of 4th grade.
Why Mentor Kids in Reading?
Reading is a foundational skill that enables individuals to go on to learn and do anything. A child who struggles to read will struggle with everything in school. Mentors have the distinct privilege of sitting and working with an individual child and helping them work through their areas of weaknesses outside of the typical pace of the classroom. This one-on-one attention can and does make a world of difference for a child, especially a child who struggles.
With this I READ program through United Way, the outcomes for the 2013-2014 school year are proof that mentors are making a big difference in the lives of these kids. For one particular school in the district, kindergartners who scored 30% on letter identification at the beginning of the school year passed at 100% at the end of the year. Similar results for the letter sound tests in first grade prove that the program continues to work past the first year.
