1. The Mirror Rearview; Report # 8
November 25, 2018

Report # 8; An on-going series from Stephen P. Bye; Correspondent for the Mirror Rearview, a fictional newspaper in Laicos County, an imaginary USA municipality. (November 25, 2018) After my brief discussion with Jim Nasticks two weeks at the ribbon-cutting ceremony at Sausage Creek Links, I wanted to obtain a much greater perspective on his opinions about the revolutionary changes at the three Laicos County golf courses implemented by “Duff’ Hacker, the County Golf Executive. The following is my entire interview with Mr. Nasticks. Reporter: “I gather from you comments to me two week... (read more)

2. MIDTERM Election Fallout
November 14, 2018

Well, thank goodness the 2018 midterm elections are over. The greatest benefit to me? No more gag-inducing television advertisements for candidates and propositions. (Whew!) Fortunately, I voted early, and was out of the country for the last two weeks of mud—feces?—slinging. Over the last 20 years, political candidates and their so-called appeals to the electorate have gotten progressively worse. Here are examples of what spews forth: 1. What I have done in the past to deserve your vote. This component is, in the main, equal parts hyperbole and fiction, and represents a relatively small ... (read more)

3. THE KAVANAUGH DEBACLE: Cause-and-Effect
October 15, 2018

For the past week I’ve been thinking about the vetting process for the latest Supreme Court justice, Brett M. Kavanaugh, which included some high-school-stuff allegations by Christine Blasey Ford. Wow! What a circus. The whole shebang gave the world—especially the Europeans—another reason to laugh at us for being uncouth, uncultured clods. I hope nothing from my high school days comes back to haunt me, but then again, that was a more innocent era—as far as I know. Truthfully, I do remember being preoccupied with bosoms, but knew I wasn’t supposed to touch them. Here’s why: A friend groped... (read more)

4. GUT: A Real American Hero
October 04, 2018

You know, folks, I’ve led a happy, carefree life being blessed with supportive, cheerful parents and siblings; which likely led to the choice of companions I chose in my youth. My coming-of-age years were an absolute lark. From that early time, I know of no other individual who has glided through life with the comparative ease than I have. Oh sure, during the journey there are the counted sorrows we all experience: death of loved ones; being dumped by one you adored (at the time); idiotic financial investments, etc. I am not bragging, but life has been a hoot. I am over-the-top thankful, and e... (read more)

5. The Mirror Rearview; Report # 3
September 13, 2018

Special Report #3: Stephen P. Bye; Correspondent for the Mirror Rearview, a fictional newspaper in Laicos County, USA. (September 13, 2018) This reporter decided to play Hammer Creek Club yesterday to evaluate the ongoing changes implemented by Lester “Duff” Hacker over the past month, since beginning his new position as Laicos County Golf Manager. I decided to play as a single golfer and made an online tee time at 9 AM for nine holes of golf. As I drove into the facility, I immediately noticed that the main billboard was gone, as well as several advertising signs bordering the parking lo... (read more)

6. CHANGE: A Random Walk from Known to Mystery
August 27, 2018

This essay describes events that reflect our human condition; our inane ability to morph from a system of relative societal harmony to one of cacophony. What follows is NOT intended as a value judgment of individuals or organizations and groups, but simply an angle on so-called progress from my exclusive point-of-view—that and nothing more. My scope of information comes from five generations that have overlapped during my lifetime. Plus, I have worked and lived abroad, which gives me the benefit of a variety of international experiences, opinions, and worldviews. I have a lot of raw data to cr... (read more)

7. America's Political War
August 25, 2018

In 2014, acting CIA Director John Brennan had allowed his people to hack into the Senate Intelligence Committee's files along with e-mail accounts from certain Senators' staffers. Brennan took a stance on the issue. He said at the Council of Foreign Relations, "'Nothing could be further from the truth,' 'We wouldn't do that. I mean, that's just beyond the scope of reason." Later on, he finally had to admit guilt as the inspector general uncovered the hacking. There were calls from the left for Brennan to be fired including media outlets like the Washington Post. Today, critics have come... (read more)

8. The Mirror RearView; Report # 1
August 20, 2018

Welcome to my first blog. In this fictional presentation, I take the role of a reporter for the Mirror Rearview, a news service that covers the satirical events in Laicos County, an imaginary municipality in the United States. This blog will be updated at least twice per month. Special Report: Stephen P. Bye, correspondent for the Mirror Rearview. (August 16, 2018) This reporter has learned that the Laicos County Commissioners have held secret meetings over the past six months regarding the operation of the three municipal golf courses. A subcommittee, headed by County Ex... (read more)

9. The SOCIAL MEDIA Blues
April 13, 2018

Facebook (FB) is today’s prominent social network, overtaking Myspace circa 2008, and as such, a widely exploited electronic process that allows family and so-called friends to stay in touch. At least that is the intention. One sends out and receives “friend requests” for acquaintances near and far. While most people seem to maintain a friend list of less than 100, others have thousands (count ‘em). A thousand friends? I mean, seriously, folks, get a grip. Comment: Anyone with 1,000 “friends” is probably trying to sell something. With Facebook, instead of writing individual letters one ma... (read more)

10. Florida Medicaid Fraud
February 26, 2018

Florida has been one of the leading hotspots of Medicaid fraud for years now. Last year, Bizjournals reported new charges filed in a $1 billion Medicare fraud and money laundering scheme and in January , a home health agency owner was convicted in a $57 million scheme. According to a report from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services' Office of the Inspector General, the Federal Medicaid Fraud Control Units recovered more than $165.5 million from investigations and cases in Florida alone. The Importance of Healthcare Medicaid and Medicare Programs According to AHCA, the... (read more)

11. Why We Salute Our Flag
January 27, 2018

In light of recent actions by the NFL and some of its players this author felt it important to review the reasons why we pledge our allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America. The United States Flag has thirteen stripes alternating red and white from top to bottom. Each stripe represents one of the thirteen original colonies. In the upper left hand corner is a blue rectangle bearing 50 white stars. These stars represent the fifty states of the United States of America. The thirteen colonies which are represented by the stripes were the colonies that declared independenc... (read more)

12. School Choice: Do the Claims Stand Up to Research?
January 01, 2018

The idea that parents should have the right to remove their children from low-performing schools and enroll them in high-performing schools is the brainchild of Milton Friedman, a Nobel Laureate in economics. Friedman's idea is quite simple. If there was real competition for students by schools, quality would improve. It is this way in business. Why not in schools as well. The argument rests on two factors. 1) The definition of school performance and the measurement used to determine performance. 2) That competition is, indeed, a factor in school performance. On both these counts, the school c... (read more)

13. Educational Standards and the Ironic Distance
December 28, 2017

Standards in education create what Slavoj Žyžek calls an ironic distance. One can think of this as a law that is ignored by all including the enforcers of that law. Another way to think about the ironic distance is as a social policy that is accepted by all but denied in practice. The former evokes visions of highway speed limits that are routinely ignored by motorists and only sporadically enforced by the police. The latter brings to mind blatant racism in a nation that claims it has extraordinary civil rights laws on the books. Finally, one might think of ironic distance as the religious lea... (read more)

15. Want to Understand Trump's Travel Ban? - Take One Good Look at Europe
December 07, 2017

We live in a day when good sound reasoning has taken a permanent sabbatical to the land of PC fantasy. MSM, Democrats and liberals and well over half of academia’s darlings have chosen to abide where truth never darkens the door. This condition is best illustrated by President Trump’s recent retweet of videos posted by a British nationalist who stands against the Islamisation of the United Kingdom, which clearly show Muslims in acts of serious violent crimes. One video shows Muslims beating up a crippled Dutch boy who needed crutches to walk. Another video captures a Muslim smashing ... (read more)

16. EXECUTIONS - OR BLATANT FRAUDS ?
November 07, 2017

EXECUTIONS – OR HISTORICAL LIES ? Were these legendary figures really sacrificed ? When most executions which impinge on the public conscience are proclaimed, nobody would ever imagine that they would not be carried out despite appearing to do so – or were they, just in case? But just in case of what ? Mainly, when the uncertainty of public backlash from the resulting outrage is deeply felt. Sometimes when the spectre of superstition has raised possibilities of uncontrollable public reaction to fear. In short, when they threaten to convert these public acts of “lega... (read more)

17. Military Retirement Gifts Buying Guide
October 02, 2017

Military Retirement Gifts Buying Guide Military retirement gifts have been around for centuries. Even thousands of years ago members of the Roman Army were gifted something special upon retirement. These days, retiring military servicemen and servicewomen can be just about as difficult to buy for as any other person, but this time you are dealing with someone who most probably is very set in their ways and very firmly know their likes and dislikes, especially the things they dislike! That results in a pretty tough challenge when it comes to buying them something fulfilling for their retir... (read more)

18. REFORMATION or How Politicians screwed-up the System
September 25, 2017

It is basic human nature to make simple things complicated because so-called big-brained intellectuals get paid a lot of money to offer convoluted, and often times conflicting, explanations for simple matters. We seem to like complications in order to deny and/or avoid the truth. Even though in a past life as a consultant I’ve taken part in this charade, I am a believer of Occam’s (or Ockham’s) Razor which states the simplest or most obvious explanation is the correct one. Here we go— The theme of high school and college graduation snore-fest speeches, since before I was born, and probabl... (read more)

19. From Contradiction to Reprobation - NY Anti-hate Protesters Resolve to Hate Trump
August 22, 2017

America seems caught up in the promotion of minorities such as the LGBT and leftist causes, but tolerance and diversity has stalled and has begun to roll backwards down the hill to its own demise. Shortly after the Charlottesville protests, Facebook, that bastion of balance, which is now pounding away at conservative materials in a so called cleanup, allowed a call for protesters to come out to Trump Towers and spew hatred. In a grossly hypocritical, incongruous and typically contradictory leftist style approach to politics protesters were found carrying placards and chanting "New Yo... (read more)

New Cumberland, PA - June 3, 2017 - Today on World Clubfoot Day, CURE International, along with its partners in the Global Clubfoot Initiative, launched a bold strategy with a vision of a world where every child born with clubfoot walks free from disability. Ending Clubfoot Disability: A Global Strategy to 2030 has an ambition to ensure that by the year 2030 at least 70% of children born with clubfoot in lower and middle countries can access treatment. Currently, less than 15% of children in these countries access treatment that would prevent a lifetime of disability. Every year 174,... (read more)

April 13, 2017

Medical web-based businesses have been on the rise, while the number of HIPAA enforcement actions by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has risen exponentially as well. Since the beginning of this year, HHS has announced several large settlements with companies that failed to comply with HIPAA’s requirements.
