Why A Wooden Pizza Paddle Is the Best Baking Stone Accessory

Cooking,Cuisine,Consumer
A pizza paddle is a culinary tool that resembles a shovel. It can even be described as a giant spatula. It is used by all professional pizza makers primarily to transport pizza in and out of the oven. A paddle also makes pizza making at home so much easier, especially while using a pizza stone.

Why Wooden Paddles Work So Well

Wooden paddles are highly recommended for home baked pizzas, especially when using a stone oven, a traditional oven, or a convectional oven. Wooden paddles are great because the handles are less likely to conduct heat than those made of metal. They are also easy to hold and move. The traditional look of a wooden paddle is attractive for home kitchen decor, and the dough will not likely stick on to the wooden paddles like it would on a metal one. When the pizza is done, the wooden paddles can conveniently be used as a cutting board for it. If guests are over, it makes for a nice chef like appeal when serving the pie.

Caring For Your Wooden Paddle

In order to care for your wooden paddle, it's important to lightly oil the paddle. Food grade mineral oil is recommended. Just put a drop of it on a cloth and wipe it nicely over the paddle. This also prevents the absorption of odours from the food.

Different Woods Paddles are Made Of

Pizza paddles can be made from different types of wood. Each type of wood should still sustain some occasional oiling to ensure that it withstands heat and food stains/odours well. The types of wood you can choose from include Mahogany, Birch, and Walnut. These make the best paddles and are high quality long lasting grades of wood. The surface of the paddle can be floured or coated as well when placing the dough on it.

Paddles of Wood and Pizza Stones of Clay

Pizza stones are the traditional way of baking pizza and the stone baked kind is light, crisp and gives an authentic pizzeria Italian type of taste and feel to it. Terracotta clay does well as a stone and works nicely with a wooden paddle in the traditional sense.

Paddles Come in a Variety of Shapes

For your paddle you can get a variety of shapes. You can get a round one, a one edge round, one edge square one, a full rectangle, a full square, or a circle. All of these give options for what shapes you want to shape your pizza in.

Some Advice For Baking the Perfect Pizza

For home baked pizza in style, and not just the frozen variety but the fresh chef's selection variety, using the wooden paddle with a stone made of clay is the best way to do it. This is one way to ensure that your pizza comes out just perfect. It will smell and taste just great! Wood burning ovens are even better for making pie. The unglazed clay surface of a hot stone absorbs and distributes warmth evenly from the oven so that it tastes and bakes perfectly. The pizza stone should be left to cool in the oven and later washed off with light soap. This will help it to not absorb any odours of the food.

Using a paddle can make it easier to slide the pie on and off the paddle when it is ready for cooking or when it is placed on the clay stone. There is no easier way to bake a perfect pizza using these two pieces of equipment. To impress your guests and to make great pizza, make sure that you have the two most important pieces of equipment for cooking. This is the pizza paddle, and stone. Then you will be well on your way!

Victor Alba has a site that gives a lot of information about baking stones and the accessories that accompany them. If you would like more information about this specific accessory, then go to How a Pizza Paddle Complements Your Stone.
