Dinosaurs, Delicacies and To-Die-For Views: Exploring Toronto

Travel & Tourism,Art and Culture,Advice
A Toronto city break is an absolute must for anyone visiting Canada. This fabulous city has quickly become one of the most popular destinations in all of North America and it is easy to see why. It has an electric atmosphere thanks to the vibrant nightlife, fantastic restaurants and many different cultural activities on offer. In addition, Toronto is also incredibly diverse and multicultural with over 140 languages spoken! This makes it a unique, warm and welcoming city with something for everyone.

It can be challenging to fit everything into a short Toronto city break, but here are a few of the best sites that any visitor should put on their list whilst they are here.

CN Tower

The iconic CN Tower rises high into the clouds above Toronto like a huge hypodermic needle making it one of the more striking buildings, particularly at night when there is a free light show that runs year-round. In addition to observing the unique 1970’s engineering, it is also worth riding the glass elevators for amazing views of the city and beyond. This was once the highest freestanding structure in the world at 553m, so you will certainly get a great view from the top of this communications tower and tourist hot spot.

St Lawrence Market

One of the best ways to see the beating heart of an unfamiliar city is to head to a local market, and the St Lawrence Market has been an important part of Toronto for over 200 years. Here you will find over 50 food stalls in the beautiful restored 1845 South Market where butchers, fishmongers, bakers, pasta makers and cheese vendors among others hawk their goods. I recommend checking out the North Market on the opposite side of Front St on a Saturday where there is a Farmers’ Market from 5am, whilst on Sundays there is a fun antiques market filled with all kinds of goodies.

Royal Ontario Museum

Prepare to be dazzled at the ROM which is one of the biggest museums in all of North America with over 6 million specimens and artefacts in the permanent collection. These are divided between the Natural History Galleries and the World Culture Galleries, plus there are also all kinds of large temporary exhibits from around the world throughout the year. You can spend a good day here exploring the dinosaur rooms, Egyptian mummies, Chinese temple sculptures, Korean art and much more. The museum offers free daily tours which are highly informative and intriguing. The ROM also hosts Friday Night Live programmes in the spring and autumn when the building is transformed into a makeshift disco!

These are just three highlights to check out during a Toronto city break, but there is a lot more to see and do in this terrific Canadian city. In order to get the most out of your Toronto city break, you should book your holiday through a specialist Canada tour operator who will share their expertise with you in the planning of the perfect trip.

John Dixon is the Chairman and Managing Director of Prestige Holidays. For almost a decade his award-winning team has been crafting bespoke Toronto city break packages for their clients. John is an experienced world traveller and tries to visit each of the destinations regularly in order to ensure the quality of the properties he recommends, and stay up-to-date about the latest local news and events. He has a taste for the finer things in life and has an interest in arts, history and culture.
