Family movies need to accomplish one task — they need to appeal to everyone in the family. Sounds like a perfectly concise way of telling you exactly what this movie type should deliver, right? Well, it doesn’t quite work like that. In short, Mom and Dad are usually on the outside looking in, and when they look in, it’s all about animation. You can’t really blame kids for loving cartoons, and you certainly can’t blame movie studios for putting out animated films they know kids will love. The kid likes what they see, which means they convince their parents to take them to the theater. The problem is that you tend to grow out of it at some point, which is what makes it a tough go for parents. There is one place, though, where kids & adults can meet halfway, and this is with movies starring dinosaurs. Everyone thinks they’re cool and endlessly interesting, but they haven’t existed on the planet for sixty-five million years. By default, any image of a dinosaur has to be rendered by an artist, which means you have no choice but to accept animation if you want to gaze upon a dinosaur. As luck would have it, there are actually a number of family-friendly dinosaur movies worth checking out. Here are some choice dinosaur movies to add to family movie night: The Land Before Time — Who knew a journey to paradise would be so wrought with sadness & peril? Even for a kids’ movie, this late-80s film deals with some heavy stuff. Dinosaur — When the life they knew is shattered by a large object from space crashing into the Earth, the movie’s protagonist & companions must travel to safer territory while dealing with a changing world & dangerous carnivores. This is an underrated gem. Ice Age — This is an entertaining tale of a band of travelers from different prehistoric species trying to stay ahead of the changing climate. If this weren’t bad enough, factor in a deceitful sabertooth & a human baby, and you’ve got one amazing adventure. The sequels weren’t bad, but the first film really set the standard for great writing & having a stellar ensemble cast. The Good Dinosaur — What if man and dinosaur had actually crossed paths? This cute little movie stayed off of people’s radar for some reason, but if you’ve got kids with a bit of a silly streak in them, this is a great movie. Gojira — Obviously, this would be meant for older kids. Still, this is the granddaddy of dinosaur movies, though some would argue that Godzilla isn’t technically a dinosaur. Either way, this Japanese entry started one of the greatest movie franchises of all-time. Family movies certainly won’t be the same when you start throwing dinosaurs in the mix. However, be sure to talk to your kids about the content they may see. Even the cutest dinosaurs were giant creatures capable of violence, so take caution and go with what’s best for your family. Flix Brewhouse near Austin has dinosaur movies, as well as every other new movie release available.
