If you’re a movie fan, you tend to be big about seeing every single movie you can. And as a fan, you can attest to the last twenty years being the era of blockbuster superhero movies. They seem to be everywhere, and just when you think you’ve gotten past the last one, here comes yet another “super” film. At some point, you’d think that a certain fatigue would set in with the moviegoing public. As it turns out, though, the background to these superheroes tend to be really compelling, and you just get sucked in time after time. Still, even if the entertainment factor is still high, there are certain elements we could use less of, and herein lies the beauty of the more “chill” superhero movie. We’re all (mostly) intelligent people capable of putting two and two together (mostly), so moviemakers know that they can get a little more subtle with their storytelling. Luckily, for those of us who dig superhero movies, there’s a bit more subtlety on the horizon. Here are some of the coolest “super” movies to look forward to in 2019: Captain Marvel — OK, so the whole subtle nature is nowhere to be seen on this movie, but that’s not the point. Part of what makes the anticipation for this movie so high is that it’s one of the few movies of this genre that have a prominent female lead. The movie follows the journey of an Air Force pilot who, through an accident, has her DNA radically changed & becomes one of the galaxy’s mightiest heroes. She is often torn between her humanity & emotion and her emotionless “alien” side. Hellboy — This character has already had two feature films (2004 & 2008), but this reboot has been promised to be a closer adaptation to the graphic novels by Mike Mignola. Hellboy is caught between the supernatural & human worlds and is set to do battle with an ancient sorceress bent on revenge. There is a gritty, hard-edged feel of the titular character that some thought was missing in the first two films, but this new film coming in April seems to capture a lot of it. Glass — This one’s a doozy because there’s so much going on and few details to really know exactly what to think. In essence, this is the (possible) last of a trilogy of movies that started in the year 2000. The sequel to that movie came about in 2016 & only showed its connection by way of a twist ending. Now, we have 2019’s Glass, and truth be told, everyone is still befuddled. Superhero movies are meant to be fun, exciting, and tell powerful stories that resonate with many people; it’s what the movies are all about. It is nice, however, to get a few superhero movies that rely more on the story & less on the glitz of CGI wizardry to get a point across even if the point is simply to entertain. 2019 looks to be one of the biggest “super” movie years in quite sometime, so it’s safe to say that there will be a little something for everyone.
