Explore the Hidden Attractions of Each Cinque Terre Village

Art and Culture,Travel & Tourism
A Cinque Terre day trip from Florence is a definitive highlight of a trip to Tuscany. With a name that translates as ‘Five Towns’, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the string of villages that cling precariously to the rugged coastline that lies to the west of Tuscany, in Liguria. Originally cut off from main roads, this fishing community is still tricky to navigate on wheels and is definitely best explored on foot on a Cinque Terre day trip from Florence.

Each town is characterised by colourful houses and surrounded by steep terraced vines and olive groves that lead down to the glistening waters of the Mediterranean. Despite the familiar aesthetic of the villages at first glance, every one offers something that little bit different. Here are some of the hidden attractions you should seek out on your visit.

Manarola

The Views

Just past the playground near Nessun Dorma and up the steps that take you up to the hilltop, you come across the Manarola cemetery. The views from here are outstanding and you will likely enjoy them without the crowds.

The Hike

On a Cinque Terre day trip from Florence you are probably going to expect to do a little walking - and you will. This part of the trail that leads to Riomaggiore sees you passing through vineyards and terraced agricultural fields and indulging in panoramic views across the coast.

Riomaggiore

Gelateria Centrale Di Germani E Ghiaccio

For a delicious gelato this is the place to go. Right on the seafront, you can enjoy your refreshing treat while soaking up the views of the traditional fishing boats and pretty harbour. The pistachio flavour is a winner here.

Watch the sunset in Riomaggiore

This has got to be one of the most amazing places to catch a glimpse of the setting of the sun. As it descends it casts the most ethereal light across the rainbow coloured houses and finally sets behind the cliffs. A top spot to see it at its best is just past Bar Conchiglia.

Corniglia

Church of St. Peter

If you crave a little culture on your visit, the sweet church in Corniglia is worth a visit. The Baroque style dominates but there some Gothic elements dating back to the fourteenth century that add intrigue and interest. The white marble window shaped like a rose is a beautiful feature, made with the marble from Carrara.

Vernazza

Soak up Some Sunshine

Make your way down to the port and find a quiet spot to relax and catch a few rays while absorbing the idyllic scene that surrounds you.

Explore the Tiny Alleyways

Behind this charming town is a treasure trove of small alleyways lined with tiny characteristic houses. Head off the beaten path and explore and you’ll encounter some great photo spots.

Monterosso al Mare

A Spot of Sunbathing on the Pebbles

As the only town with a real ‘beach’ this is the one to head to if that’s on your agenda. You can rent a beach chair if you really want to make the most of it, but remember the beach is pebble and not sand.

Enjoy a Seafood Cone

This local speciality just has to be tried and the best place to grab one is at Il Bocconcino, in Monterosso. They serve the freshest, most succulent made to order seafood that, although you have to queue up for, is well worth the wait.

This is just a smattering of delights you can expect to experience on a Cinque Terre day trip from Florence. Remember to book your experience with a reputable local tour operator because there is nothing quite like having those in the know show you round.
