2 Chianti Vineyards to Visit on Tuscan Wine Tours

Art and Culture,Food & Beverages,Travel & Tourism
Chianti, also known as the Colline del Chianti, is a region within Tuscany that lies between the cities of Florence and Siena. Tuscany is often cited as one of the most beautiful regions of Italy and this is undoubtedly the most scenic part of Tuscany, making it the very best of the best in Italy. Indeed, it is this area’s rolling hills and grand villas that form the image of Tuscany in the popular imagination.

Chianti vineyards

Along with the stunning scenery, it is renowned all over the world as a winegrowing region, producing its famous namesake wine and the Chianti Classico. Many of the Chianti vineyards are recognised by the prestigious DOC or DOCG marks, making it the perfect setting for a day wine tour. By booking a wine tour, you will be able to visit several excellent wine producers. This article will share highlights of two must-visit Chianti vineyards.

Villa Le Corti

The Villa Le Corti wine estate has been in the family of Prince Duccio Corsini since 1363. It is located within easy reach of tours operating from Florence, being 15km south of the city.

It lies within the heartland of Chianti Classico production and has 50 hectares planted with the famed Sangiovese grape. Winemaking has a long history at Le Corti, with visitors being able to explore the historic wine cellars that have remained unchanged for centuries, yet are still in full use. Around 73 hectares of the estate are also devoted to an olive grove - cultivated with organic principles - that is amongst the largest and oldest in Italy.

Apart from its wonderful produce, what makes Le Corti unique amongst Chianti vineyards is its rich architectural heritage. The villa that overlooks the vineyard was built in 1600 at the tail-end of the Renaissance and the dawning of the Baroque period. It is the work of Santi di Tito, the most influential painter of the “proto-baroque” or “counter-mannerist” style. You can admire di Tito’s work as you sample the finest wine and cured meats in the villa’s serene inner courtyard or its magnificent cypress-lined park.

Rignana

The Fattoria & Villa di Rignana offers much more than many other Chianti vineyards. It is, first and foremost, a winery, producing a medium-plus bodied Chianti Classico with tones of fruit, leather and tobacco. The 2016 is a well respected and favourite vintage.

Apart from making some of the best Classico in the region, the Villa di Rignana also provides accommodation and hosts numerous events. The complex of buildings originated as a monastery in the 12th century, but was remodelled as a graceful private residence in the 18th century. Its understated exterior - being of a typical rustic Tuscan wine estate - opens into fine chambers decorated with rococo frescoes. The Villa di Rignana is another inspiring locale to sample the best that the region has to offer in wine, food and culture.

The best way to visit these exquisite Tuscan wineries and the many others spread across wider Tuscany is to book a day wine tour. With an experienced tour operator, it is simple to take in these serene rural spots within hours of waking up in central Florence.
