Book Review: "Creative Illustration & Beyond"

Art and Culture,Hobbies,Home Business

Book Review: "Creative Illustration & Beyond"     Lately I have been looking for some artistic inspiration for new projects and boy oh boy did I find an awesome one! Stephanie Corfee is an artist and author of AT LEAST 8 books that teach different ways to create mixed-media projects. This book has been the first one of hers that I have read and am going to do every single project in it. They are simple, fun, and are easy to put your own personality twist into everything.

Projects she will teach in "Creative Illustration & Beyond" are:

"Whimsical" family tree with painting, using secret ingredient for texture, and an inexpensive way to make your letters resistant to paint so your family name pops, and guidance for the lettering of each leaf which will include every family member's name. She teaches you how to transfer your art to different types of paper.

Inspiration for drawing and creating patterns in everything. Patterns that can be used when drawing letters or phrases, animals, flowers, etc.

Mandala charms: With this awesome skill you can take your drawing to a whole new level! Learn how to make a cool mandala, scan them in your computer so you can print out a copy to use in your jewelry. The art will survive longer this way, plus you can adjust the size without having to draw it all over again.

If you are familiar with Photoshop and/or Illustrator you can adjust coloring, digitize the art, and even sell the design online. She does not give step by step with Photoshop in this book, but she walks you through how to create the mandala awesomeness.

Sketch art: Some clear and simple direction that she offers has already enhanced how I draw. Less is more is all I will say about that.

Creating your own invitations: Stephanie shows you her preferred way of creating hand drawn invites.

Anthropomorphic Animals: This is her animal doodle section that shows you how to give them a touch of human characteristics without going overboard. Beautiful drawings and ideas for creating baby and children gIfts!

Dog Portrait Pillows: This tutorial shows you how to take a hand drawn picture (she does dog portraits in this one, but you could do anything), prep your pillow material for the pattern transfer, how to actually transfer your drawing to the material, the way  she sews it up, and a photo of the finished product.

How to create your own jigsaw puzzle- or at least how to transfer your art onto the blank puzzle craft.

Help with perspective drawing: how to draw from different views, draw the same item from different stand points, and tons of other drawing inspiration.

Family Shadow Box: This one is a hand drawn photo that you want to create, making a sort of 3rd looking photo by layering different items in the frame.

Scrap-booking goodies: how to design and use your own drawings to make your scrapbook creations the most original and special that they could possibly be.

Creating story characters:  this skill could be very useful if you are thinking about creating a children's book or drawing for one. She creates a sweet theme of different characters that she makes up, and even uses specific characteristics from people she knows Once you hone your own style, you can use these for Print On Demand Sites or for amazing gifts.

Vintage and Retro Illustrations: Stephanie goes over the basic styles and uses for these types of items. She makes a really cool and vintage painting on a wood board and walks you through every step.

In the very beginning of the book she lists out the main tools that you will need in total. Then, for each project, she takes a photo of the supplies you will need AND lists them out. So, you can go and buy supplies one craft at a time so it won't be so bad.

The book itself is colorful, beautiful, and the steps are laid out step by step. Did not find one single part confusing.

And that is a summation of some of the awesome nuggets you are going to find in this book. Once I start creating them I will come back and post photos. Bought the book last night, read it in like an hour cause I couldn't put it down. Hope you can find as much inspiration as I did, I am totally charged up and ready to rock.

Here is her website (totally worth checkin' out):

And for supplies, I like the shop Stephanie recommends which is DharmaTradinigCompany, or Amazon. price and quality is important so between these two it is possible to make out like a bandit!

I was able to order a paper catalog from Dharma Trading Company so that was a total bonus to me. I am a sucker for catalogs. They prices might change in between catalogs, but I just love to be able to look through  all the supplies and be inspired for new products. Here is the digital one:

***Don't forget, for Amazon you can almost always get an awesome deal on used ones...(I found mine for $3 plus shipping).

If you try this book out, please leave me a comment and let me know if it was awesome for you too! I like to keep checking in with my readers and make sure I keep suggesting and sharing things that are helpful. :)
