GMC Still Breathing Life into Buick after Pontiac Demise

Nevertheless, Uncle Jiggs drove a Buick in Lancaster most of his life. There may have been a few years while living in Lancaster a Pontiac was his chariot of choice. However, Pontiac sales seriously declined with the advent of foreign automobiles arriving on the American scene, and eventually GMC stopped production. Pontiac became a dead product line.

Uncle Jiggs was proud of the trucks and cars he helped manufacture as an employee for GMC. He was convinced that if you were to compare trucks made by GMC, Ford, and Chevy, GMC would always come out on top as the higher end in the arenas of truck performance, comfort and attractiveness. He knew dozens of the product assembly line employees by name, and they were his friends. Many shared his sense of pride and loyalty in what they did every day for a living.

As children, we would sit at the feet of Uncle Jiggs while he told us stories. He was a good story teller, and his favorite one to tell was the story of how Henry Ford, an American automaker from Michigan, incorporated his motor car company in 1903, the same year that David Buick had incorporated GMC. They were rivals, of course, even though they were operating in different states. Uncle Jiggs was quick to point out the several prototypes made by Buick, which were nearly road-ready by the time the company incorporated. He always reverently ended his story with the death of David Buick at a rather young age, with relatively no inheritance for his relatives. He would never know the empire he began.
