When you’re planning a ski holiday, the first task is to decide exactly where you should go. In Europe we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to superb snow conditions and top-class resorts with chalet accommodation, so it certainly isn’t an easy decision. If France is on your radar (and it really should be) for your winter escape in a catered chalet, Tignes is definitely an option to consider. Knowing the basic ins and outs of a resort is always a good idea before you book a catered chalet. Tignes has plenty going for it so prepare to be tempted! The Resort The resort is actually made of a collection of villages and, in terms of snow cover, it is renowned as one of the most reliable in Europe. The five villages sit at different altitudes on the mountain: Val Claret – 2,100m Le Lac – 2,100m Le Lavachet – 2,100m Les Boisses – 1,800m Les Brévières – 1,500m Each of the villages has its own character, with the higher ones tending to be more popular due to their accessibility to the higher slopes and the excellent facilities. That’s not to say the lower ones aren’t appealing as well, and while they have fewer cafes, restaurants and so on, that also means they’re a lot quieter (ideal for families). Wherever you choose to stay, all of them with the exception of Les Brévières are connected by a free bus, so you won’t have to miss out on anything. The resort is known for being very affordable, so attracts a lot of young, fun-loving skiers as well as families with children. Because the demographic is so diverse, the nightlife and après-ski offerings provide something for everyone. While the resort doesn’t have the abundance of charm and character of its neighbour, Val d’Isere, it more than makes up for it with its affordability and ski opportunities. The Skiing When you factor in the interlinking access to neighbouring Val d’Isere, you’re looking at around 300kms of pistes covered by 78 lifts – impressive by anyone’s standards. There is also a vast range of off piste and backcountry terrain for the free riders to get their teeth into. Because of its altitude, and its proximity to the Grande Motte Glacier (3,450m), Tignes is one of the few places that offers summer skiing and snowboarding. While there is certainly scope for everyone on the varied terrain, it’s definitely heavy on the offerings for intermediate and expert skiers – with loads of adrenaline pumping challenges on the doorstep. There are some very good novice slopes on the borders with Val d’Isere, however, so there’s no problem for the beginners to find something to suit. The Extras Of course, delightful as skiing is, there are going to be times you might want a breather. Aside from kicking back and relaxing in your catered chalet, Tignes has numerous other activities on offer. Some of these include an indoor climbing wall, tobogganing, ski-bungee (yes, as much fun as it sounds!), mountaineering, ice driving, snow-shoeing, helicopter rides, dog-sledding, mountain biking on snow, the waterslides and pools of the local aqua centre and plenty more. You’ll certainly never be bored! Looking for a Catered Chalet? Tignes Awaits! So if you’re planning on a ski holiday in a catered chalet, Tignes just might be the place for you.
