Did you ever wonder as to how to make a boat? Let’s discuss the simple technique made out of wood, since wooden boats are the oldest boats used and created. To make a boat first the design has to be chosen. For creating houses a plan is created and similarly for making a boat the design is to be created. Next plywood should be chosen of which the boat will be made. Plywood is made from a combination of timber glued together at 90 degrees to each other. The glue used to put the timber together are of Type A, B, C, and D. Type A bond is created by phenol formaldehyde resin which is set by controlled heat. Pressure is also applied in the heating process. A permanent bond is formed that is not affected by extensive cold, heat or wet. It is black in colour. Type B is produced by melamine fortified urea-formaldehyde resin. This is also set by applying heat and pressure. Types C and D are made of Urea formaldehyde resin. It is suggested not to use these types in boat building process. After selecting the plywood, lofting is performed in order to build a wooden boat quickly. In this process, dimensions are taken out from the plan created. On the construction items, full size components are drawn. Station lines and central lines are drawn on the plywood. Station lines are drawn at 90 degrees angle to the centre line. From the marks made from the design; lofting lines are drawn through steel rulers. For making curves, lofting batten is used. When the line drawing process is completed; these lines are used to cut components off the ply. Gluing and stitching: The components cut from the ply are now made to be stitched and glued. On the components a row of holes are made by a drilling machine. On the adjacent component that has to be fixed with the other piece, a matching hole has to be made. Both the pieces are stitched together from plastic cable ties or copper wire. To the joint, epoxy liquid is applied to make the joint firm. After the epoxy liquid sets in, the stitches are removed from the joints. Additional epoxy resin is applied to the joint of the component. Painting: This is done to protect the boat from damage against moisture and water. Besides this it gives the boat a finishing effect thereby making it beautiful in appeal. In order to protect against moisture, epoxy liquid can also be applied to the boat. It also provides protection against ultra violet rays. In order to make boat firstly you would require some tools. These will be power jigsaw, power plane, handsaw, hand plane, and hand sanding block, clamps, set square, steel ruler, power drill, orbit sander and tape measure. However there should be protective equipment also available while one makes the boat. Prominent equipment includes disposable gloves made of plastic that helps in avoiding skin problems and are available at cheap prices in markets. Safety glasses are to be used while making a boat as chemicals epoxy is harsh. If spectacles are used by a person building the boat then this can prove useful too. Sanding process usually gives rise to dust and may harm one’s lungs. Particle mask is a way to get rid of such problems. Long sleeved cloth should be used with long covered trousers for wearing while working on the boat. The sand due to sanding process in the boat can lead to skin irritability. For building a wooden boats, these simple steps should be followed.
