In the EL James novel “Fifty Shades of Grey”, the sparks are set to fly between Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. But there is another relationship which has the potential of sparking a different kind of equation. The relationship between Christian and Jose is far from romantic. In fact both have their eyes on the leading lady Ana. It is Ana who has to decide who will get her heart. But even when she starts a physical relationship with Christian bordering on BDSM, he does not want it to be a romantic relationship. The casting team of “The Movie Fifty Shades of Grey ” has won another pat on their backs for choosing an actor like Victor Rasuk for the role. Choosing Victor for this role is all the more significant because they would need an actor who fits the description and the cultural bill of the character of Jose Rodriguez. And all this and more is present in oodles in Victor. The third wheel of the novel and the film adaptation, Victor comes from a Dominican background and with his Latin American/Spanish looks (not stereotypical though), is one of the better parts of the venture so far. Though the movie and the book are both billed as an erotic love story, the theme of friendship is also masterfully entwined within the plot. The friendship that Ana shares with Kate and Jose makes up for an interesting premise of the novel. Though the friendship that Jose has for Ana borders on love and infatuation, it is never truly explored in the novel, and the readers probably go home with the idea that Christian wins on account of his mysterious ways and the raw power he exhibits in the boardroom and the bedroom. But hopefully, Victor’s portrayal of Jose will win some sympathizers for the latter. The clash between the two alpha males of the novel, Christian and Jose, is introduced in a subtle manner by the author, when Christian goes on a coffee date with Ana right after the photo shoot with Jose, Ana and Kate, and asks her if she is dating someone. By someone, he meant Jose. Probably he had sensed that Jose would be a strong contender as a love interest of Ana. The chemistry between Jose, Kate and Ana seemingly borders on the platonic but Jose has an anguished lover’s heart that beats for Ana, which can be sniffed out by the other strong contender, Christian Grey. If only, Ana would have sensed it and shared the feelings.
