Run a finger across the surface of one of your kitchen cabinet doors. Did you pick up dust? Does your finger feel sticky? That means it's time to give your cabinets a good cleaning. Dust, grease, and grime are good at hiding on wood kitchen & bathroom cabinets. To keep your cabinets smooth and clean, wash them every three months, or at the beginning of winter, spring, summer and fall. Instructions as follows: Firstly, examine the finish on your wood cabinets to determine the proper cleaning agent to use and the appropriate cleaning strength for the amount of soil or grease on the cabinets. Most wood kitchen cabinets have a protective coating such as varnish or a polyurethane coating, so it will be safe to clean them without harming the finish. Secondly, dust the surface of the cabinets with a clean cloth. This will remove dirt and prep the surface for cleaning. Thirdly, prepare your liquid cleaning solution. For cabinets that require only a light cleaning, use a mild liquid detergent. If your cabinets have greasy buildup, use an oil soap or an orange-based cleaner to tackle the job of cleaning and degreasing. These products do not contain ammonia or bleach, and are strong enough to remove grease without harming the wood. Fourthly, fill a bucket with lukewarm water. Add four or five squirts of the detergent to the water. Do not use hot water, because it can seep into the wood and cause it to warp over time. Fifthly, dampen a lint-free cloth with the cleaning solution. Wash the first cabinet lightly, but thoroughly. Sixthly, clean hardware on the cabinets with the mild liquid detergent and water solution. Do not use an ammonia-based cleaner for the hardware, because it can get on the wood and mar the finish. Stick with the simple detergent and water cleaning solution. Seventhly, when the water gets dirty or greasy, empty the bucket, and refill it with fresh, lukewarm water and cleaning solution. Eighthly, fill another bucket with clean, lukewarm water to rinse each cabinet after you wash it. Use a second clean, lint-free cloth for rinsing. Follow with a third lint-free cloth to dry each cabinet and the hardware. Tips & Warnings Keep a spray bottle of all-purpose cleaner for spot cleaning your kitchen cabinets and removing food splatters and smudge marks. Apply a furniture polish once a year to restore luster to the cabinets. If your cabinets are antique and have a "true oil" finish such as tung oil or walnut oil, you will have to reapply the oil after cleaning the surfaces. For an all-natural cleaning solution, mix one part vinegar with three parts lukewarm water. Never use powdered or abrasive cleansers on wood kitchen cabinets. The ingredients can scratch the wood.
