I love Bob Ross. He was my childhood hero. |
If you don't know him, he was an amazing painter. And he was the host of The Joy of Painting, which was a relaxing instructional painting show.
If you never watched an episode and you’re curious about it, they pretty much have all the episodes on YouTube. Just search ‘Bob Ross’ and they’ll show up.
From time to time, I watch some of his episodes and they still amaze me till this day.
The biggest thing that amazes me is the fact that he has a very simple art style. In just 30 minutes, he can paint a beautiful landscape that looks like it’d take weeks to create.
And the crazy thing is…
He only uses simple brush strokes and techniques.
He’s all about simplicity. And that can apply to any craft or skill, including copywriting. When I first started learning, I thought copywriting was all about using these persuasive tactics and formulas.
As I learned more, I realized that it all boils down to resonating with your market.
Focusing on their pains.
Making them envision their desires.
That’s the fundamental of effective copywriting. And it all starts with your market research.
There are many different ways to do market research. I personally like to use three methods.
The first method is to simply interview your potential customers. Ask them specific questions about their pain points, desires, frustrations, and goals. It's best to have them answer in detail so you can get all the gold you can use.
The second method is to stalk public communities. Going on forums, social media groups, and YouTube channels where your market hangs out. From there, you can observe what your market is talking about and gather information from there.
The third method I like to use is looking at reviews. Going on sites like Amazon where there are products people are buying that are similar to yours. Read the reviews. Take note of what people like about the products, and what they don't like about them. Then you can use that information in your copywriting.
Once you use those three methods, you'll have enough information for weeks, even months worth of content.
