For the sake of privacy, I’ll be keeping parts of this article vague where it’s necessary. I have a friend who was going through a lot of anxiety and depression a long time ago, to the point where he decided to go through some therapy. He had two options: 1. Use one of those therapy apps like Talkspace or Betterhelp, both of which typically cost over $50 per week, but you can virtually communicate with your therapist five days a week through text or audio message. 2. Schedule to meet with a college-provided therapist once a week for free, but technically not since the cost was already included in his tuition. Of course, being a typical broke college student, he chose the second option. A few months go by, and what were the results? Frequently canceled meetings. Minimal effort put in by the therapist, as if she’s there merely for the paycheck. And an unsatisfied patient. I didn’t want to tell him that he should’ve seen this coming, but… He should’ve seen it coming. This almost happens in every case of choosing between free and paid things. Choosing free: While you don’t need to pay a single penny out of your pocket, the quality of the product or service you’re getting will most likely be terrible. Choosing paid: Maybe you’re paying a little amount or paying a premium. Either way, you can count on the quality of the product or service to be pretty good. Very rarely will you come across something free to be more superior than its paid alternative. Just a reminder lesson to kick this new week off with.
