Nowadays, more and more people are making a living off of being content creators on platforms like YouTube and Twitch. But at the same time, more and more people are being screwed over by the exact same platforms. Take this story, for example: There’s a YouTube content creator I’ve been following for almost 10 years. In one of his podcast episodes, he revealed that at the peak of his career, he was making over $10,000 per month. His channel blew up after one of his rant videos went viral. Since then, he grew it by consistently uploading videos once or twice a week, and the ad revenue alone was bringing in that monthly five figure income. After YouTube changed their algorithms multiple times and removed ads from a bunch of his videos, his income dropped to under $2,000. Companies are becoming more aware of who they want, and don’t want, to be associated with. When these companies realize that their ads are being placed in videos that contain content that they deem inappropriate, they can pull their ads and those content creators will lose out on the ad revenue. YouTube content creators don’t have to worry about this as much with the help of Google’s superior technology, there’s a dynamic ad system so companies have more control over where to place their ads. Twitch, on the other hand, is a different story. They don’t have that kind of technology, so when content creators are putting out content that companies deem inappropriate, they don’t get any ad revenue at all. So what they do instead is funnel their viewers into membership platforms where they have more control over Patreon or OnlyFans (Yes, despite the negative connotation, it’s still first and foremost a membership platform that competes directly with Patreon). Smart move by them. It’s the same case for businesses who have built an audience on social media.
