London, June 9th (Reporter: Wei Qun, CNS) - The Goldsmiths Confucius Institute for Dance and Performance was inaugurated in London on June 9, the first of its kind worldwide dedicated to dance and performance and also the fourth Confucius Institute in London.
Mdm. Xu Lin, Director-General of Hanban and Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters, Chinese Ambassador to the UK Mr. Liu Xiaoming, President of Beijing Dance Academy Mr. Li Xu, Warden of Goldsmiths Mr. Patrick Loughrey, Deputy Warden Professor Simon McVeigh, Dame Joan Ruddock DBE MP and Baroness Morris, Chair of Council of Goldsmiths, among other dignitaries took part in the Inauguration Ceremony.
Hanban’s Director-General Mdm. Xu Lin offered congratulations and sent greetings to the establishment of the CI. According to Mdm. Xu, more than 360 Confucius Institutes are now up and running in 106 countries worldwide. What is behind her appearance at the Ceremony is that it’s the first-ever Confucius Institute for Dance and Performance in the UK and also the world as a whole.
Mr. Liu Xiaoming said in his remarks that Confucius Institute is, in its own right, a bridge connecting China and the UK while dance links the two peoples together. Dance and performance are a kind of international language and also represent the common ground of China and the UK.
Mr. Patrick, President of Goldsmiths, the University of London - a well-known university for the arts and humanities in the UK, spoke highly of the establishment of the first Confucius Institute committed to dance and performance, saying “to establish the fourth Confucius Institute in London, and the first dance and performance Confucius Institute in the world, is a great pride and honor, and will undoubtedly prove a milestone in our university’s history.”
Mr. Li Xu, President of Beijing Dance Academy, expressed his confidence in the CI, indicating that “we’ve maintained years of partnership with Goldsmiths. The inauguration of the CI at Goldsmiths will not only provide British students with a platform to understand China, promote educational and cultural exchanges between the two countries, but it will definitely deepen friendship between the two countries.”
Mdm. Xu Lin donated 3,000 volumes of Chinese learning books to Goldsmiths on behalf of Hanban at the Inauguration Ceremony. Distinguished guests appreciated opera, dance, poem recitation performed by teachers and students of Beijing Dance Academy and Goldsmiths.
Ms Annie Guo, Director of the Confucius Institute, said that “I hope and believe that the strong collaboration between Goldsmiths and Beijing Dance Academy will lay a solid foundation for the sound development of the CI down the line.”
