SAO PAULO--General Motors Co. ( The Steelworkers Union of Sao Jose dos Campos said in a statement Tuesday that workers had been locked out of the Sao Jose dos Campos plant, where "The paralyzation happens on the day that there was a unified action planned at the company involving unions and union federations and on the eve of important meetings between According to the union, third-shift workers were asked to leave the factory floor before the end of their shift, and first-shift workers were advised of the stoppage upon arrival. "The company took into consideration strong evidence--in recent hours and days--of internal mobilization at the plant and understands that the current moment is delicate and prefers not to expose its employees to incitement and provocations," the auto maker said. The company said it will pay employees for the day, despite the suspension of production. Automobile sales in Brazil have taken a hit this year as the global economy slows, dragging down Brazilian growth with it. Restrictions on auto financing also have crimped sales after a surge in new car loans in 2009 and 2010 led to record default levels earlier this year. Sales through the end of June were down 1.2% from 2011 levels, and production was 9.4% lower than at the same time last year.
