Advantages and Disadvantages of Dry Ice

Dry ice, also referred to as card ice, is the frozen form of carbon dioxide. Because of its lower temperature (-109.3 degree Fahrenheit or -78.5 degree Celsius) than water, it is often preferred for use as a preservative. Also, it does not leave any residue. In every 24 hours, dry ice sublimates (turns directly to carbon dioxide gas without going through a liquid phase) at a rate of five to ten pounds and at a temperature of -109.3 degree Fahrenheit (-78.5 degree Celsius) under Earth atmospheric pressures. The super-cold temperature of dry ice and the ability to sublimate make it great for refrigeration.

Uses There are lots of uses for card ice (another name for it) because of its unique properties. Common applications for dry ice are discussed below.

1. Doctors use card ice to freeze wart for easy removal, though liquid nitrogen can also be used for the same purpose. It is also used to keep bone marrow frozen when it is shipped.

2. If you have a broken refrigerator, it can be used as an alternative to keep the contents in your freezer frozen.

3. It can also be used for speeding up the growth of plants. Use dry ice to improve the growth rate of plants by keeping them in close proximity with the plants. This is due to its unique ability to turn directly to carbon dioxide which is very important for growth in plants.

4. Fishing or Hunting - Preserve your trophy animal by putting dry ice at the bottom of your cooler and covering it with paper while you place your trophy on top. You want to avoid direct contact between ice and your trophy as this can cause great damage.

5. For Processing Fresh Meat - It is used in the industry for processing perishable items like ground meats and sausages.

Disadvantages 1. The product can burn the skin within seconds because it has a very low temperature. The cells of your skin can become dead within seconds of direct contact with it.

2. It restricts respiration and can make one unconscious if present at a 7% concentration in air. This is why goods containing dry ice are exclusively shipped by cargo aircraft.

3. Because it sublimates directly to form carbon dioxide gas; it reduces the concentration of oxygen in areas that are enclosed or not well ventilated. This is also known as asphyxiation. Ice packs are used for various different reasons including: • Dentists: dentist offices use ice packs to reduce swelling after dental procedures and tooth extractions. • Hospitals are commonly found to use the Techni ice packs to reduce swelling after surgery or childbirth. • Veterinarians also use the reusable hot/cold ice/gel packs to transport pathology samples, to warm bedding for post surgical patients and also as a moldable cold compress for horses legs. Ice packs can be used for hundreds of different purposes and are a great product to have in the home.
