There is so much information available on UK university rankings that it may sometimes appear to be a little confusing. There is no official ranking sanctioned by the UK government for UK universities. However there are several UK based rankings such as the Complete University Guide, The Guardian University Guide and the Good University Guide that are popular with students for informal comparison. On a global basis the Times Higher Education World University Ranking (THE), QS World University Ranking (QS) and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) appear to be popular when comparing similar universities from different countries. While this might provide a handy solution for those needing information to assist in their decision making process, there is a tendency to then simplify the decision making by relying on the rankings. The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the current system used for assessing the quality of research in the UK higher education institutions. This is a government funded initiative that delivers outcomes that provide benchmarking information and establish educational yardsticks, provides accountability for the investment in research and uses the information for grant allocation from the government funding bodies. Based on the outcome of REF 2014 the results of 154 UK universities was assessed and 30% were judged to be world-leading, 46% internationally excellent, 20% recognised internationally and 3% recognised nationally.
